This is a sub-page of Proto:Gran Turismo (PlayStation)/Trial Version Disc.

Even though this build is closer to the final game, there are still many aspects that were changed between this version and the retail release.

Main Menu

Game Mode Selection

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL GAMEMODE.png GT-JPTitleScreen.png
  • The start menu now looks like the final, except Sony is not credited at the bottom of the screen, and instead it says "Development by Team Yamauchi".
  • Replay Theater and Options are not present in the main menu, and instead are located in the Arcade Mode menu.

Arcade Mode

Use the following GameShark code to access Time Attack, 2 Player Battle, Load/Save Game and Goodies (WARNING: disable the code before starting a race or exit from Arcade Mode, otherwise the game will crash):

Main Menu

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL ARCADEMENU.png GT1 FINAL ARCADEMENU.png
  • A different background picture is used, the exact one used in Grand Valley 300km Endurance splash screen in GT Mode.
  • Replay Theater is located here, instead in the title menu.
  • The Options menu contains the menu to configure game settings (moved to title menu in final) and loading/saving your progress (moved to main menu in final).

Select Manufacturer

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL ARC SELECTMAKER.png GT1 FINAL ARC SELECTMAKER.png
  • Because the Honda NSX '97 is the playable car in this build, Honda is placed on top in place of Subaru.
    • If 2 Player Battle is forcibly accessed, the manufacturer order is exactly like in the final Japanese game, but choosing Subaru gives Honda cars and vice versa.

Select Track

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL ARC TRACK.png GT1 FINAL ARC TRACK.png
  • There were checkpoint indicators in the track map.
  • Clubman Stage Route 5 has a completely different preview video.

Replay Theater

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL REPLAY THEATER.png GT1 FINAL REPLAY THEATER.png
  • The menu design and order is different.

Option Configuration

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL OPTION2.png GT1 FINAL OPTION2.png
  • Because you're not supposed to access 2 Player Battle yet, the options pertaining to it are absent.
  • A different background is used.

Goodies

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL GOODIES.png GT1 FINAL GOODIES.png
  • Items that are supposed to be unlocked by performing Easy difficulty races have a white border instead of blue.
  • The "Press Cancel Button" prompt was removed in the final.

Removed Arcade Mode Interfaces

Option Selection

GT1 TRIAL ARCADE CONF.png

As mentioned previously, the Options menu contains the menu to configure game settings, which were moved to the title menu in the final, and loading/saving your progress, which were moved to the main arcade menu in the final game.

Quit Confirmation

GT1 TRIAL ARCADEQUIT.png

When you quit from the Quick Arcade menu, you are given a confirmation prompt whether to do so or not. This was removed in the final game.

Hmmm...
To do:
The Weight Reduction menu doesn't have a explanatory text written yet.

Once the codes are enabled, you can actually play all races in Go Race and save and load your game data; the icon and description used are identical to the final Japanese game. Noticeably, every menu in this mode feature brighter colors compared to the final game.

Some warnings with the aforementioned GameShark code:

  • You must disable the codes before starting a race or exit from GT Mode, otherwise the game will crash.
  • If you enter a race and you disable the codes as warned above, you may be locked out of most menus again when you return to the GT Mode menu; you will need to re-enter the codes again.

My Home

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL HOME.png GT1 FINAL HOME.png
  • Trade uses the Option icon from the Test Drive build.
  • A menu called Goodies appears here, which was removed in the final game. Choosing it (with codes enabled) causes the game to hardlock and crash, requiring a console reboot.

Trade

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL TRADE.png GT1 FINAL TRADE.png
  • The Trade text on the top and Memory Card 1 on the left use a different font.
  • Trades are done from the first slot of the memory card, instead of the second slot; the change was likely to minimize car duplication (not that you can move your current memory card to slot 2 to duplicate your car anyway).
  • The car list box appears even when you are merely prompted to prepare to load data.

  • Some cars do not have yet a line-up picture, and for those who did have, those images were changed in the final.
  • The Toyota Celica GT-Four appears twice; one of them uses Celica SS-II's picture with the correct price, and the other has the GT-Four price with an higher price. Either way, both leads to the same car.
  • The Honda Integra Type-R is missing entirely from the Honda dealership.
  • The Subaru line-up (except for the Impreza WRX-STi Type R, which only got an capitalization fix) were reordered.

Car Spec Information

GT1 TRIAL CAR DESC.png GT1 FINAL CAR DESC.png

  • Not all cars have a car description in this build; some of them display a message instead.

  • The "GT" in "GT League" logo is also black, and the rectangle surrounding it lacks the emboss effect.

  • The bottom text were altered; text stating that tuned cars are allowed were removed from the first three cups (only the Normal Car Speed Contest prohibits tuning anyway), while the racing car requirement for GT World Cup was also removed.

Special Events

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL SPECIAL EVENT.png GT1 FINAL SPECIAL EVENT.png
Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL SPECIAL EVENT2.png GT1 FINAL SPECIAL EVENT2.png
  • All events in the first page would have required A License and those in the second page would have required International A License. To make sure the player's B License wouldn't go into waste after only one event (Sunday Cup), the drivetrain and lightweight races was changed to require the B License instead. The Megaspeed Cup and Normal Car Speed Contest was also changed to require the A License instead.
  • The drivetrain races, Lightweight Battle Stage, Normal Car Speed Contest, and Hard-Tuned Speed Contest all use a picture of an in-game car. FF Challenge uses a Honda Prelude, FR Challenge uses a Nissan Silvia (S13), 4WD Challenge uses a Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32), Lightweight Battle Stage uses a Mazda Demio, Normal Car Cup uses a Nissan Primera 2.0Te '95, and the Hard-Tuned Speed Contest uses a Mitsubishi FTO '97.
  • The arrow in Megaspeed Cup is yellow instead of gray and the background color for All Night Endurance II is red, instead of green.

  • The required license information was added to the entry screen in the final game.
  • The list of eligible cars for FF Challenge, FR Challenge, 4WD Challenge, and Lightweight Sports Battle Stage were removed, instead replaced with an catch-all requirement in the bottom part. (This makes entry for the Lightweight Sports Battle Stage a guesswork if you didn't have a strategy guide).
    • The eligible cars mentioned in drivetrain and Lightweight Sports Battle Stage races are:
      • FF Challenge:
        • Toyota: Starlet, Corolla, Sprinter (likely referring to BZ-G cars; Corona Exiv and Celica SS-II were not mentioned)
        • Nissan: Pulsar, Primera (only Pulsar in the game is the four-wheel drive GTi-R)
        • Mitsubishi: FTO, Mirage
        • Honda: Prelude, Integra, Civic, CR-X
        • Mazda: Lantis, Demio
      • FR Challenge: (note the lack of mention of foreign cars, as all of them in this game are all FR cars)
        • Toyota: Mark II, Chaser, Supra (except Castrol Supra GT), Corolla Levin, Sprinter Trueno (Soarer was not mentioned)
          • Note that despite this indication, the Castrol Supra GT can still be entered in this demo and in the final game, as the car is a FR car and the game does not restrict racing cars from entering drivetrain events.
        • Nissan: Fairlady Z, Skyline (except GT-Rs), Silvia, 180SX (GTS-4 would have not been allowed, too, but the GT-R LM road car would have been allowed)
        • Mazda: Eunos Cosmo, Eunos Roadster, Efini RX-7
      • 4WD Challenge:
        • Toyota: Celica GT-Four
        • Nissan: Skyline GT-R/V-spec (Skyline GTS-4 and Pulsar GTi-R also belong here, but not mentioned)
        • Mitsubishi: GTO (except SR), Lancer (exclusion of SR likely an error since the GTO SRs are also four-wheel drive)
        • Subaru: Alcyone, Legacy, Impreza
      • Lightweight Sports Battle Stage:
        • Toyota: Starlet, Corolla, Sprinter
        • Mitsubishi: FTO, Mirage
        • Honda: Integra, Civic, CR-X
        • Mazda: Lantis, Eunos Roadster, Demio
  • The racing car only requirement was removed from the Grand Valley 300km Endurance Race (which has a typo fix in the final) and SS Route 11 All-Night Endurance Race 1; a clause prohibiting racing cars was added to SS Route 11 All-Night Endurance Race 2.
  • The number of races in Normal Car Speed Contest was increased from 3 to 5.

GT Hi-Fi

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL GTHIFI.png GT1 FINAL GTHIFI.png
  • GT Hi-Fi's menu is treated as if it is a championship in this build.

Time Trial

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL TIMETRIAL2.png GT1 FINAL TIMETRIAL2.png
  • Time trials for the reverse versions of the tracks use mirrored track maps for whatever reason in this build.

Memory Card Battle

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL MEMORYBATTLE.png GT1 FINAL MEMORYBATTLE.png
  • If the game fails to find a game data on the memory card, the game does not prompt you whether to load from another memory card.

Machine Test

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL MACHINETEST.png GT1 FINAL MACHINETEST.png
  • Machine Test top banner says that it is a part of Go Race menu, despite the fact it is accessed from the main map. It is possible that it was considered to be in the Go Race menu at one point in development, though.
  • There is no text describing the purpose of the machine tests yet.

Removed GT Mode Interfaces

Part Already Bought

GT1 TRIAL ALREADY BUY.png

Translates to "Buying complete". Instead of showing this message, the final game simply disables the buy button for upgrades you already bought.

Car Description W.I.P.

GT1 TRIAL CAR DESC WIP.png

As mentioned, some cars do not have car descriptions yet in this build, instead stating that their descriptions are being prepared. The cars known for having this message instead of a car description are:

  • Mazda Eunos Roadster (only both the Normal '89 and '93 version)
  • Mazda RX-7 (all models, FC and FD)
  • Toyota Chaser (all models)
  • Toyota MA70 Supra GT Turbo Limited
  • Toyota JZA70 Supra TwinTurbo-R
  • All TVR, Dodge, Chevrolet, and Aston Martin cars (pressing Info on these cars does nothing, however)

Option in GT Mode

GT1 TRIAL OPTION.png

The empty Options menu in My Home returns again in this build, in a broken state compared to its previous appearance with no buttons displayed. This menu would be left over in the same state in the final game, with katakana text removed for English releases and translations for European languages.

Record in GT Mode

GT1 TRIAL RECORD.png

Again, the non-functional Record menu in My Home returns again in Trial Version demo, with the upper and lower parts updated to use the current design.

Regulation Violation Warning

GT1 TRIAL REGULATION VIOLATED.png

A generic regulation violation message. In the final game, every race event in the game tells you what rule you breached (drivetrain, car nationality, tuning, race car status, etc.) if you attempt to start a race event with a rule violation, leaving this message unneeded.

Special Car Line Up

GT1 TRIAL HONDA SPECIAL LINEUP.png GT1 TRIAL MAZDA SPECIAL LINEUP.png GT1 TRIAL MITSUBISHI SPECIAL LINEUP.png GT1 TRIAL NISSAN SPECIAL LINEUP.png GT1 TRIAL SUBARU SPECIAL LINEUP.png GT1 TRIAL TOYOTA SPECIAL LINEUP.png

The Special Model line-up was now updated to use the current used car line-up layout. Since there's only one special model per manufacturer anyway, this gets axed from the final game.

Theater

GT1 TRIAL THEATER.png

Another unused aspect from the Test Drive disc returns again, this time in an unmodified state from that build, with the header still saying it's part of Toyota dealership menus and day/money/car indicator still using a very early design.

Wheel Shop

GT1 TRIAL WHEEL.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL2.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL3.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL4.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL5.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL6.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL7.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL8.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL9.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL10.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL11.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL12.png GT1 TRIAL WHEEL16.png

The message reads: You can purchase a wheel for your tires. Select your favorite wheel from the wheel catalog.

(Translation: Athena (cleanup by FMecha))

A wheel shop! It seemed that Polyphony Digital had considered a wheel shop in this game, but decided not to go with it. Ironically, some of the work-in-progress racing modifications, such as those of Nissan Skyline GT-R (R33) and Dodge Viper GTS appeared like a mere wheel swap here. Clicking any of the rim options causes the game to crash. Also, pages 13 and 15 of the wheel list are duplicates of page 11, while page 14 is simply a duplicate of page 12.

The page files are named WHEEL.HTM for the first page, WHEEL2.HTM for the second page, and so on.

The sequel, Gran Turismo 2, would feature a working wheel shop, taking advantage of licensed wheel brands.

License Test

License Quick Menu

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 TRIAL LICENSE QUICKMENU.png GT1 FINAL LICENSE QUICKMENU.png
  • There is no background in the menus.
  • The test result status looks different, with no squares to surround the trophies.
  • You can't view license records in this version yet. Because the gold and silver times are stored there, these times must be guessed in this version.

Start of License Test

Pre-Race and Settings Menu

Main Pre-Race Menu

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 Pre-Race Menu JP Demo.png GT1 Pre-Race Menu JP.png
  • The menu layout is different, with the car settings background also used here.
  • Qualifying cannot be skipped in this version.
  • Entry List does not exist, so there is no way to see who your opponents are.
  • The car the player is currently driving is not shown on the top of the menu.

Main Settings Menu

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 Pre-Race Settings JP Demo.png GT1 Pre-Race Settings JP.png

  • Not only the car the player is currently driving is not shown on the top of the menu, the track the player will be racing also disappears in this screen.

Change Parts/Set Up

Trial Version Final Version
GT1 Aero JP Demo.png GT1 Aero JP.png
  • The car settings background also appear in both Change Parts and Set Up screens in this version.
  • Under Aero Dynamics section, there is a permanently disabled option called cd, which measures the car's drag coefficient; this menu was removed from the final game.
Trial Version Final Version
GT1 Tires Setting JP Demo.png GT1 Tires Setting JP.png
  • Tires are named generically, and only four are available, all of them corresponding to semi-racing tires. As such, racing tires cannot be installed even if purchased in this version.
  • For all parts:
    • There is no description text that quickly explains what the part type does.
    • The blue banner color is darker.
