Proto:Source Filmmaker/Leaked Expiration Date Props
This is a sub-page of Proto:Source Filmmaker.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article? Notes: Expiration Date is filled to the brim with Unused Models that can be found in some form that were part of the Leaked Beta. |
In the Team Fortress 2 Short Expiration Date, there are tons of unused models that were remade specifically for use in the short. What makes these remakes of models so odd, is that they are remakes of models that were leaked back in 2012, before the open beta of SFM existed. Unless you have these leaked files, you wouldn't notice that these models were references to these leaked files. I said leaked way too many times...

Unused Models
Miss Pauling's Moped
This model got the reskin treatment... four times! It was first seen in Meet the Spy, right at the end of the short (as the RED Spy and the BLU Scout's mother are holding hands in the picture) with said moped parked on a wall, with the front only being visible. All of it was then reskinned to make it look less-realistic, as the front tire shield is the only part of the moped that matches TF2's art style. It was then reskinned (and remodelled a bit) again to be recolored purple, for Miss Pauling to use with Expiration Date. The Moped was then added into TF2 proper in the Scream Fortress X update as a Scout Taunt, with the tires made much wider, with the moped being comically small. The VMT for the taunt iteration implies that one of its textures is from Expiration Date itself, with the model being at least based on the one used in the short!
Round Table
A round table seen in Expiration Date, which goes completely unused in TF2 and doesn't appear in any of the Meet the Team videos (it does appear, however, in the Mann vs. Machine trailer). As you can probably tell, It was likely made for use in Team Fortress 2, rather than Source Filmmaker, given that a RED and BLU variation under two separate skins exist with low quality models, and was most likely misplaced when Valve ported everything over from TF2 to the SFM project of Expiration Date. The third skin is referred to as "roundtable001_poker". This was most likely used for testing the skins. The table as seen in the short uses a redone texture, which has a higher resolution and lacks the paper on the table.
Healing Gel Jar
First seen in Meet The Medic, sitting on the Medic's shelves (behind the mounted Medi Gun that's healing the Heavy) are a few medic-related pieces of equipment, such as a microscope. One of the items in the cabinet is a jar that looks strikingly similar to the one that houses the Self-Aware Beauty Mark in Expiration Date, complete with the same number. It was likely Valve used this jar as a base for the jar that houses the aforementioned mini-bread monster. The jar was later refined by Valve even more to make it into two actual items for Team Fortress 2. The first, named the Self-Aware Beauty Mark, is a reskin of the Jarate, and the second, the Mutated Milk, is a reskin of the Mad Milk.
Chess Set
Seen in Expiration Date for only a few seconds (when Scout is finally let into the Spy's smoking room) as a background object atop a table. The model isn't static either. The pieces can be moved around, and all have translation points for use in the SFM. The pieces for the chess set reappear (and are remodeled to be more detailed) as part of the community created short "End Of The Line", in which both the Medic and Heavy play with.
Spy's Secret Microphone
In the short, the Spy and Scout are seen using a microphone. The prop has been re-textured to match Team Fortress 2's art style, making it less shiny when light (or lack thereof in the Spy's smoking room) hits it. The other obvious modification made is that the microphone comes out of Spy's desk, rather than protruding from the prop itself. In place of the missing mic, the model has its switch moved from the bottom to the top (where the microphone would be) and has an extra button in place of the switch being moved. From a top-down perspective, it bears a striking resemblance to the Spy's own sapper.
Spy Portraits
These interesting portraits are internally named Pictureframe in the SFM. The portraits you see exist under one model and six separate "Skins" (Skins 1 and 6 are duplicates of each other). To go even deeper, two of the skins aren't used at all, the two in question are The Newspaper clipping/ ID Card picture frame, and the Spy wielding a sword portrait. All of the others can be seen on the walls of Spy's smoking room in Expiration Date.
It gets deeper still as a further two portraits seen in the short were never leaked, nor do they appear in Team Fortress 2. The remaining two are a parody of Napoleon Crossing the Alps (The spy replacing Napoleon) and a parody of Still Life with Fruit (with a butterfly knife penetrating a pear).
Strange Polaroid Texture
Judging by the image, this texture was likely an inside joke, a way to test multiple skins on objects, or quite possibly meant to be part of one of the Meet the Team videos. This texture is one of the many skins for the model of the polaroid used in the Meet the Spy video. The polaroid model is actually also used in Meet the Sniper too, which has been documented here. The drawing was eventually used in the Expiration Date, when Spy pulls Scout's death wish out of a bucket, though the drawing itself is not identical to the one found in the leaked files.
Dartboard
This dartboard is seen at around 1:28 - 2:51 in the video and at 3:31, behind the Heavy. The dartboard in question comes with 3 darts under 3 different movement points. There is no Blue Variant of this model.
Cigarette Butts
Strangely, this is never used in any of the Meet the Team shorts where the Spy is present (despite him being an avid smoker), but does make appearances in TF2 as a background object, and in Meet the Medic. The leaked file instead uses a single image of cigarettes, rather than a fleshed out 3D model seen in Expiration Date. What makes this even stranger are the weird black marks on the texture, suggesting there were plans to make it fully 3D, but it was reserved for Meet the Medic. This particular Ashtray appears several times in the short, in just about every scene in Expiration Date up until the Bread Monster attacks.
Medic and Engineer Props
Possibly the largest collection of unused props in the whole short. A total of five unused props are found in this scene alone. These are, from left to right, Medic's microscope, Engineer's red trays (from the Engineer Update trailer), the Medic scanner (from Meet the Medic), the loudspeakers (from Meet the Spy), the round white ashtray (also from Meet the Medic) and a prop known as Medic_Spyhead_Contraption (twice!). Like with the Spy's microphone, the props were given an artistic makeover to make them less shiny under light, and to fit with Team Fortress 2's artstyle.
