So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Hmmm...
To do:
  • Replace screenshots of the DRT-tuned Lizard Nightmare differences with native-resolution ones.
  • Document Interactive demo

Welcome to the 1999 season of Real Racing Roots. Four teams and four manufacturers await you in R4: Ridge Racer Type 4.

PocketStation Support

Hmmm...
To do:
Document this better.

R4-Pocketstationsupport.png

The Japanese version includes support for PocketStation allowing the player to unlock cars in the game between players. However, the PocketStation was never released overseas. Support for the PocketStation was brought over to the international versions and can be normally accessed through the Load/Save menu.

Unused Car Selection Graphics

RRT4-UnusedCarIcons.png

These symbols are probably for Extra Trial teams, and are intended to be shown in the car selection screen. From left to right: White Angel (Age Solo Ecureuil), Assoluto Works (Assoluto Vulcano), Terrazi Works (Terrazi Utopia), Nightmare (Lizard Nightmare), and a Namco logo, probably for the 321st bonus Pac-Man car.

Regional Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
The other Extra Trial cars have some religious references present in the Japanese version edited out internationally:
  • The PRC Terrazi Utopia has "ORIGINAL SIN", "EXPULSION" and "ADAM" decals on the car's hood/midsection
  • The RTS Assoluto Vulcano has "EDEN" on the rear of the car, and "EVE" and "TEMPT" on the sides
  • The spoiler decal on the DRT-tuned Lizard Nightmare differs from the US, Europe and Japanese versions. The Japanese version has "DEATH" and "Sacrifice" written on its top and bottom respectfully, while the International versions has "NIGHTMARE" and "Lizard" instead. Now that's metal.
Japan International

  • The title screen also differs from the three versions. The Japanese version has a pompous but rather broken description below the title similar to the US version. The Europe version simply displays "Ridge Racer Type 4" unlike the US version with the "R4" present, but missing the description, The US version which has "R4" written boldly above its full title name.
Japan Europe US

  • The race loading screens also show differences between the US/EU and Japanese versions. The Japanese release has another text field that shows which racetrack and event is chosen currently, while the US and the Europe release simply have no such thing.
Japan International

  • During the first few seconds of the Grand Prix intro, glaring differences can be seen. The Japanese version does not show the first "Welcome to Real Racing Roots" text and has the RRR pillars present, while the Europe version does not have the pillars, and lacks the Real Racing Roots '99 text below its logo, but still has the greeting text dialogue appear earlier than the Japanese version (The "Attention please" message was also removed outside Japan.), the US version, being the most cluttered, shows a text box greeting the player and includes the RRR pillars.

  • This message congratulates you on beating the Grand Prix, but it only appears in the Japanese version of the game.
