...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
|This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.|
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Strife is an early FPS/RPG hybrid game created by Rogue Entertainment, using a modified version of the Doom engine.
An updated release featuring additional content and based on a reverse-engineered fan-made source port, The Original Strife: Veteran Edition, was released by Night Dive Studios in 2014. Since it includes the unaltered WAD files from the original release and merely patches over them with an add-on WAD at run-time, this page also applies to that version.
COPYRITE: A text lump containing a copyright notice.
copyright 1995 ROGUE Entertainment
SERIAL: A text lump containing a serial number, only checked by an unused beta version time bomb routine.
LOG75: Unused "Judgment Call time" log which has a matching BlackBird voice. Of note is that the game's endings (good, neutral, and bad) branches off here, and the game might be hinting you have a choice in the matter.
JUDGMENT CALL TIME... THE ORACLE WANTED US BACK FOR ANOTHER VISIT, BUT NOW THAT WE'VE GOT TWO PIECES, WE MIGHT WANT TO RETURN TO BASE.
LOG88: Unused "Up to my hips in blood" log which has a matching BlackBird voice.
I'M SORRY, AFTER BEING UP TO MY HIPS IN BLOOD I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING WITTY TO SAY RIGHT NOW. LET'S JUST GET BACK TO MACIL.
T1TEXT: Text for ending of demo version, unused by retail.
Congratulations! You have completed the Strife demo.
C1TEXT: Text for an unused intermission after defeating the Programmer. This is used in the v1.1 Beta.
A FLASH OF METAL CALLS YOU TO THE CORPSE OF THE PROGRAMMER. LYING ON THE GROUND BEFORE HIM, IS A PIECE OF THE SIGIL OF THE ONE GOD. AS YOU REACH DOWN TO RETRIEVE IT, A CHARGE COURSES THROUGH YOUR BODY. BEFORE YOU CAN QUESTION THIS REACTION, THE TEMPLE BEGINS TO COLLAPSE. NARROWLY ESCAPING THE DESTRUCTION, YOU ARE GREETED BY THE GRIM FACES OF YOUR FELLOW SOLDIERS. THRUSTING THE SIGIL PIECE IN THE AIR DRAWS A DEAFENING CHEER THAT FOLLOWS YOU INTO UNCONSCIOUSNESS.
Art you won't see during your romp in Tarnhill.
Unused HUD for torpedo weapon.
Graphics meant for intermissions and NPC dialog STARTUP0
The logos at the bottom are never visible in-game. The image is cropped to LOGO portion for display during startup.

...it has an inventory sprite.
Inventory icon for "Rat Buddy", not a collectible in any known version of the game.
Unused objects, given their names, it may have been a flag for an intended "Capture the Chalice" mode. In Strife: Veteran Edition it finds a home as three talismans, which grant the player a berserk power-up when all three are collected, which is present (albeit unobtainable without using a cheat code) in the original version. Veteran Edition also reintroduces Capture the Chalice, but uses the Offering Chalice alongside a blue version of said chalice.
Assorted keys and objects not used in the final.
An inventory sprite for a Power Crystal.
"Episode 1" key ring.
"Episode 2" key ring.
An unused ammo type for the Grenade Launcher.

Same as the last sound, but using a different Zombie death sound from Doom.
