Possible Debug Menu & Test Levels
Present in the ROM are a few files with interesting names:
- ARTUROTESTLEVEL.lev
- BENTESTLEVEL.lev
- LEVEL_DEBUG_MENU.lev
- LEVEL_DWC_TEST.lev
- LEVEL_MB_TEST.lev
- LEVEL_TEXT_MENU.lev
- ROBTESTLEVEL.lev
- SFXTESTLEVEL.lev
- TREVTESTLEVEL.lev
- wish_race_test.lev
I've tried to access these with file replacement and Action Replay codes but had no luck, the game locks up on the loading screen.
Also, .lev files aren't actually level models but rather small 1-2 kB files that tell the game what to load from assets.bin, which is where all of the text, graphics, and models are stored. Unfortunately, assets.bin is compressed in an unknown format, so I can't extract anything from it for now. It's possible that there's some missing files or that the files for these were removed entirely and the .lev files are all that remains. Ferrox (talk) 16:26, 30 August 2017 (EDT)
Climax tech demos
Climax put together a DS tech demo in May 2004 that consists of Diddy Kong driving around the main hub world, with two builds recently posted by Forest of Illusion (one dated May 27th, and the other on the 31st). It's likely this was made long before Diddy Kong Racing DS officially entered development, yet I wonder; Given that it's still Diddy Kong Racing content on DS hardware, should these be covered on a Proto page? --Nunof Yerbizness (talk) 15:26, 20 Feb 2022 (UTC)
- It'd be on an unreleased game page, since it is its own thing, not a proto of this game. --Hiccup (talk) 17:07, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
Documentation Spreadsheet
I've made a spreadsheet that documents which files from assets.bin are loaded from which .lev files, as well as the isolated (unused) models that are not loaded from any .lev file: here
