Darkel

Isn't there some "Darkel" guy too who was supposed to be in the game, but got cut as far as a guy who gave you missions? I read it in an FAQ on GameFAQs once, so I dunno how accurate that is. -- Rick 13:53, 21 June 2010 (EDT)

He appears in the credits, but is certainly gone. -- Prince Kassad 14:29, 21 June 2010 (EDT)
Darkel has remnants in the code, Darkel.cpp and Darkel.h are used for Rampages. --BreakingBenny (talk) 19:50, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Kemuri

I think none of these are used. They were likely for when they didn't make the blue markers disappear yet, like with the "You are already on a mission!" string:

~g~Luigi's interviewing some new girls -Come back later!
~g~Joey's out on the town with Misty -Drop by later!
~g~Toni's taken his Momma to the opera -Call in some other time!
~g~Maria and Kemuri are all tied up at the moment -Drop by later!
~g~Kenji is attending a Yakuza meeting -Call by some other time!
~g~Ray has other toilets to hang around -Try again later!
~g~Donald Love has other business to attend to -Make an appointment later!
~g~Kenji is busy! -Call by later!
~g~The Hoods are not available at this time!
~g~Come back between 05:00 and 21:00 for a job
~g~Come back between 06:00 and 14:00 for a job
~g~Come back between 15:00 and 00:00 for a job

Note that Kenji is in there twice. I wonder why? -- Sheeza 17:40, 16 April 2012 (EDT)

And note the whole "Maria and Kemuri" part too. I've read that it might have beena beta name for Asuka. MightyKombat 06:33, 17 April 2012 (EDT)

Some of these last strings might be used. AFAIR Joey's missions are accesible only during certain hours. ~y 14:35, 17 April 2012 (EDT)

That'd be the first and second. (Is there another mission by someone else that is available only from 3 PM - 12 AM?) I don't know whether they show these messages, but that should be easy enough to find out for people, since that's pretty much at the beginning of the game. -- Sheeza 15:09, 17 April 2012 (EDT)

Use of PC release date

Is there a reason this and the San Andreas article use the PC release dates, even though they include content from the PS2 version, which came out first? It's not really an issue, it just seems a bit odd, especially since the Vice City page also pertains to both PC and PS2, but uses the original PS2 release date. Supermariosomething (talk) 16:56, 14 June 2014 (EDT)

Perhaps it could have something to do with the title and the platform in the bob? -Einstein95 (talk) 16:59, 14 June 2014 (EDT)
I don't know how long it's been since, but these three games (GTA 3, VC, SA) have pages for all platforms together. --BreakingBenny (talk) 19:50, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

The "unused" billboards

Correct me, but the billboards with their structures are used in the PC version. GTA 3 PC See you in miami billboard.png GTA 3 PC The clothes club billboard.png -- Minehot (talk) 08:02, 28 September 2014 (EDT)

So I was messing around with cheat, and...

As the title says, I found these two models when doing the "change into pedestrian" cheat on the PlayStation 2 release. The two models appear to be female - An African businesswoman carrying a brown satchel and a Caucasian woman with brunette hair wearing a blue jacket, jeans and slippers. I have never seen these models in the game, so I'd like to know if they're actually used in another version (PC? XBOX 360?) or are completely unused. --Elite Octoling (talk) 10:53, 15 June 2017 (EDT)

PAL 1.40 to PAL 1.60/NTSC 1.40 - Paramedic Missions

In this section, it is mentioned that in PAL 1.40 "while picking up patients and moving in a hill doesn't move the patient vertically with the vehicle, instead that position stays the same until the animation is finished.". This is listed as a difference in only PAL 1.40, however I'm fairly sure the PAL copy I own is 1.60 (for example it has the Kingdom Come text edits and the full audio in the mission Her Lover) and this bug is still present and you will see peds float above the ambulance if you start moving down hill when picking them up, I didn't want to just remove the line without saying anything, plus I thought I should ask if this bug is in NTSC 1.40 still, that might be the difference. - - JohnnyBagHead

My dear good sir, I have both PAL v1.40 and v1.60, and that's one of those things I don't recall seeing in v1.60. You can check the SYSTEM.CNF through Notepad on your disc root to see which version it is and then check stuff up and fix if necessary. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 19:15, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, I have checked so I can confirm yes v1.60 is the version I have and this bug still happens when you pick up a patient in the ambulance and start driving downhill before the animation is finished (the issue doesn't happen if you're driving up hill however). One thing though before making the edit is I want to also make sure if this bug is present in all PS2 versions, or if it's slightly different between versions, for example if in v1.40 the bug also happens when you drive up a hill or slope, not just down. - - JohnnyBagHead (talk) 14:56, 24 February 2022 (GMT)
RE - PAL version indicators - another way to make sure is that if the disc itself has the "#" sign after the "SLES-50330" and possible whatever, if that sign isn't present, the disc is v1.40. If it is, then it's v1.60. RE: Bug - but seriously, I don't recall that from v1.60 at all - and I played those both pretty much back-to-back when I got the v1.40 disc I have. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 15:30, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
RE - Checked the SLES on the disc as well and yes it has a # at the end, so my copy must be v1.60 and that bug is still present, at least going downhill, if needed I can capture footage of it, my main question now is, in PAL v1.40 did the bug also happen going up hill, and was any bug like this in NTSC v1.40 --JohnnyBagHead (talk) 17:10, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
RE - SLES - this "#" advice also applies to any Black Label game which has revisions, also means a reprint. RE: BUG - not familiar with NTSC versions at all, can check PAL v1.40 some moar sometime when firing the PS2 up again. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 17:14, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
OK so. Mr. PSX here and the usual version indicator logic apparently doesn't work, as looking at http://redump.org/disc/4262/ and http://redump.org/disc/510/ reveal that any disc can be v1.60 - file checking is a sure way. Then. Why are PAL v1.60 and NTSC 1.40 grouped together anyway - indeed the weird glitch with der ambulance happens in both PAL ones indeed, but only when driving downhill. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 19:03, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks for confirming those details, the only thing left to find out is if the bug is at all present in the NTSC PS2 version, which I'm guessing is going to be the case as besides the 60/50Hz difference and the one blue police car in the intro credits movie, NTSC 1.40 and PAL 1.60 are almost entirely the same content wise as far as I know, but we should find someone who can confirm this for us then the appropriate edit to the article can be made --JohnnyBagHead (talk) 01:19, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

UPDATE - Found someone with a NTSC copy to test and they have confirm this bug is also present there, so it's clearly present in every PS2 version and the mention on the article is mistaken, I'll remove it, thanks for your help! --JohnnyBagHead (talk) 02:37, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Is there an actual "German version" or "French version" or not?

Local man here and that header might sound a bit odd to you peoples, but let me explain.

So. German and French languages have censorship, right? There's a catch: with PlayStation 2, the only product code specifically Europe has with GTA III is SLES-50330, this was released even in Germany and France. (Australia has its own, SLES-50793, only in Australia, with that prostitute change, not released elsewhere.) So, at least on PS2, there's not actually any German or French versions, it's all the same everywhere it was released (but there is the Australian version, as said in brackets earlier).

And you can enable the censorship in two ways. 1: Switch the in-game language to German or French. There. 2: If you want this to affect all languages in-game, set your console language to German or French. That also gives a different looking title screen (!) - take note, TCRF peoples.

Knowing that the PC version is implied to use similar tricks, that got me thinking, is the "German and/or French version" actually no different from the General European copy, which just relies on language tricks to make the game censored, as can be done at will with the PS2 version, and thus those German and French versions truly just do not exist, like with PS2? Do note that you can still see the Rampage success/fail if you change your language to German/French after picking up the Rampage icon. And yeah, I can say my copies are Finnish, because the packaging and manual happens to be that, but the software is still the same SLES-50330, so it's no different from your UK copy, or German copy, or whatever copy, the data on the discs is identical (the v1.40/v1.60 is a thing, but I don't mean that, both of those are also released at different places).

(Do note: The SLES-51061, a.k.a. General European version of Vice City, which ACTUALLY WAS ALSO SOLD IN GERMANY (seen cover arts for it), does the exact same thing as III regarding censorship with these languages, outside changing the title screen, that stays. What's interesting that in that copy, only Rampages disappear and you can get 100% one objective point too early by switching language to German or French for some reason. Though that doesn't stay if you switch language back, but health and armor stay at 200. This also happens on the General European PC version of Vice City as well. Seemingly the SLES-51595 version of Vice City, for Germany only, also removes those two missions mentioned. It would be nice to see more product codes (SCES, SLES, and stuff) in places, this version talk here almost never takes those into account.)

(Do also note: General European versions of San Andreas (SLES-52541), Liberty City Stories (SLES-51435) and Vice City Stories (SLES-54622) do not get censored when picking German.)

--PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 10:16, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

German here. There was only one European release of GTA3, which removed the blood based on console language and in-game language. So, even if you had the German version, setting the PS2 console to English and the game to English, removes all censorship.

Wrong information regarding the German rating board in the page

In the region differences, it says that GTA 3 carried a USK 16 rating, because the USK 18 rating didn't exist until 2003. This is wrong. The law change in 2003 made it so the ratings are legally enforced. The rating USK 18 existed before that, from the very creation of the rating system. For example, the game Silent Hill on PS1 is rated 18+, and that game was released before the PS2 even existed. GTA Vice City was released on the PS2 with a 16+ rating, as did GTA San Andreas, but the original PS2 version of GTA 3 was already rated 18+. The PS4 versions of every 3D game in the series now carry an 18+ rating, that is correct. I will edit the entry accordingly.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, the source (http://www.schnittberichte.com/schnittbericht.php?ID=3239) used as a reference for it even contradicts what was written previously. It states that the game was released 18+, even censored.
