An original collaboration between Sega, Japanese illustrator Yugen, and NieR: Automata creator Yoko Taro, 404 Game RE: SET -Error Game Reset- takes classic arcade masterpiece games from Sega, Bandai Namco, and Taito, as well as Capcom's Street Fighter II and SNK's Fatal Fury and turns them all into programmed robotic-humanoid girl versions of themselves called "casts" in this shoot-'em-up × RPG combination. An online-only Windows port was released three months after, and requires a DMM Games account to play.
What's even more strange in this game is the original storyline: SEGA has managed to change several events in time by using these "casts", to the point of having taken over the entire world. After being killed by a speeding car (influenced by the cast Outrun) on your way to a job interview, your consciousness is uploaded to cyberspace by a mysterious navigator named "Ribbon". With her help and the power to purify casts, it's up to you to change the past and stop SEGA from assassinating dissidents, air-striking cities, and generally making the world into a cyberpunk dystopia. The story consists of 10 chapters, and also has several crossovers and event stories with other classic arcade companies.
On October 30th, at the end of the "Half-Anniversary" event, the game was abruptly announced that it would be ending all service on January 5th, 2024.[1] Already planned events were scheduled to continue as normal, but microtransactions were disabled, pull rates of the gacha were massively increased, and regular stimulus of premium resources were handed out. Refunds were also announced to be planned for anyone who previously purchased gems.[2] An offline mode is planned, but must be downloaded before the end-of-service date.

Revisional Differences A long list of updates for a tragically short lifespan. |
Unused Graphics
Localized Health Warning Screens
There are unused English and Korean versions of the health warning screen seen when starting the game inside the files, implying that Sega could have had plans to localize the game and release it worldwide outside Japan and China.
The Korean warning screen translates to:
Warning In this game, effects such as screen flickering and flash effects may appear. When playing games, light up the room and try not to bring your face too close to the screen. Press to proceed
English Logo
An unused English logo for the game exists hidden in the files. Only the Japanese logo is used in-game; however this logo is currently used on the Traditional Chinese server.[3]
ProloguE Demo Title Screen Leftovers
The "ProloguE" logo piece.
The Resistance Base background.
Unused Cast Art
During the first month of the game's launch, early artwork of several casts were found inside the game files that were not currently playable in-game. Most of these casts were eventually added through future updates, such as Pac-Man, Daytona USA, Zaxxon, and Virtua Cop, but two were never added to the game- Get Bass and Derby Owners Club.
Interestingly enough, this is actually referenced during a prolonged fourth wall break in chapter 9. Multiple issues with the game's launch are brought up, including the entry "2023/5/16: Accidentally delivered images not scheduled to be implemented. After investigating the cause, two people in charge of the management tool were fired."

Unused Music
There are some extra BGM tracks inside the game's files that are never used in-game. Most of these unused tracks were repurposed for some interlude cutscenes in-game, and are also included on the tracklist of the SOUND! SHOCK Special Bonus Disc of the game's Memorial Album soundtrack.
404_bgm_01
This track was intended to be for a tense or dramatic battle cutscene. A short variant of this track was heard in the interlude_movie_01_10 cutscene.
404_bgm_06
This track was meant to be for a cutscene of sorts. An excerpt of this is heard in the interlude_movie_01_06 cutscene.
404_bgm_07
Though the first 29 seconds of this track are heard in-game during the interlude_movie_005 cutscene, a full 1-minute version of the music exists on the Special Bonus Disc of the Memorial Album soundtrack, leaving the rest of this track unused.
404_bgm_18
This sorrowful-sounding track was intended to be for a cutscene.
404_bgm_21
This gentle track was also meant to be for a cutscene.
404_bgm_msc004
A dramatic-sounding track. It's unknown where this was intended to be used.
Re;construct
This track was intended to be for a joyful cutscene.
Re;set
An ambient-sounding track that was meant to be for a cutscene.
Unused Localization
Inside the game's MonoBehaviour files, there exists an English and Korean translation that goes unused. This exists for most of the entire game, only ending at content released just before the end of service announcement (chapter 9/10, and a few cast stories). On later stories, sometimes English will exist when Korean doesnt, and vice versa- it's still a work in progress despite being mostly complete.
Whether the localization was abandoned due to international licensing issues or the game's rocky launch is unknown. There is no clear answer if more international versions would exist had the game lasted longer, however the fact that the translation goes as far as chapter 8 signifies an attempt was continuing to be made late into development.
An example excerpt from Galaxy Force (Cathode)'s cast story Scenario_C_A_GF_BK_05:
[...] { "mLanguage": [ "<RColor=red>エリート</RColor>でなくなった本官は\n独房にも似た個室に\nひとり押し込められた", "Since I'm no longer <RColor=red>elite</RColor>,\nthey've put me in this room\nwhich is basically a cell for solitary confinement.", "不再是<RColor=red>菁英</RColor>的本官\n獨自一人\n被關在類似拘留所的房間", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "" ] }, [...] { "mLanguage": [ "この部屋には<RColor=red>何もない</RColor>\n誰も<RColor=red>いない</RColor>\n", "This room is <RColor=red>empty</RColor>,\nwith <RColor=red>no sign </RColor>of another living soul.\n", "這個房間<RColor=red>什麼也沒有</RColor>\n也<RColor=red>沒有任何人</RColor>\n", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "" ] }, [...] { "mLanguage": [ "声を出しても\n虚しく響いて<RColor=red>消える</RColor>だけ\n", "If I cry out,\nmy voice simply echoes until it <RColor=red>fades away</RColor>.\n", "即使出聲\n也只是空虛地回響並<RColor=red>消失</RColor>\n", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "" ] },
Internal Names
404 Game RE: SET is named rbn internally, according to the names of the sound effect and voice files. Also, the RIBBON_M_Prj.acf sound archive seems to suggest the game was also called RIBBON internally.
