Chibi-Robo!/Unused Audio

This is a sub-page of Chibi-Robo!.

With the exception of the audio from sfx_hori.ssm, all audio found here also exists in the Wii version of the game.

Music

sample.hps

This strange file is present in all versions of the game. It consists of a song played with woodblock instruments and Japanese-sounding gibberish as lyrics, with some clashes sounding through the song. There's an unused model with the name "sample.dat", but this name is most likely shared due to both being test files, though a connection is possible.

yusho.hps

(LOUD SOUND WARNING!!!) A corrupted duplicate of the Super Chibi-Robo theme, this delightful song consists of the startup before abruptly rupturing your ears as it gives way to harsh static (aside from a 1.3 second break near the middle of the track). One theory is that the sound file's hps blocks were corrupted: an hps block contains about 1.3 seconds of sample data, and since the only 2 parts of the track that don't destroy your ears are this length, it seems like a possible explanation. Also, the used song appears under a much different name (super_robo), so why did the development team decide to leave a corrupted variant behind in the game files? Our best guess is that the development team was a big fan of tinnitus. The version of this song in New Play Control's files (yusho.brstm) is uncorrupted and sounds perfectly normal, making yusho.hps's state even more of a mystery.

teriyaki.hps

Hmmm...
To do:
Transcribe and compare the lyrics of each Japanese version of the song.

This is an interesting situation. When Telly's rendition of Teriyaki Blues plays in the Japanese GameCube version of the game, it draws from the file karaoke_teriyaki.thp (which is present in all versions, but only used in the Japanese version). When it's played in the International release, it draws from an .hps file like almost all other songs, simply being labeled "teriyaki.hps". However, a file with this same name exists in the Japanese version, which is an unused version of the Japanese Teriyaki Blues with slightly different lyrics. This is one of only 3 cases in the entire game where audio files are different between game versions.

Sound Effects

ssm file Name Audio Description
sfx_gicco.ssm npc_k_jingle
A jingle presumably for Drake Redcrest. The instruments used sound quite different from his final theme and jingles. (The "k" in the sound's name is probably short for "keath", which Drake Redcrest is often referred to internally.)
sfx_hori.ssm N/A
sfx_hori.ssm goes completely unused. It cannot be loaded by the game, so the filenames of these sounds are unknown. This ssm file is most likely named after Masaru Hori, just like the debug room named hori. The majority of these sounds consists of metal and wooden cabinets opening and closing, an alarm clock being winded up and ticking, wood being sawed, and a wooden object dropping on the ground. There's also a few other notable sounds such as a blanket being lifted, a short breath, and a long, winding synth noise.
sfx_kitchen.ssm kitchen_hamburg_j_taste
These seem to be voice clips for Jenny tasting a hamburger. kitchen_hamburg_p_taste and kitchen_hamburg_p_taste_good are for Mr. Sanderson tasting a burnt and correctly-cooked hamburger, respectively.
kitchen_hamburg_j_taste_good
kitchen_sunmida_ash
These seem to be sound effects for Peekoe being burned with fire while on the stove. While he does train his endurance by standing on the burner in the final game, it is an electric burner and there is no fire. However, while the electric burner's model is denkiconro.dat (electric stove), all other stove-related models have the word "gas" in the name. Additionally, there are unused particle effects for gas stove fires of varying intensity located underneath Peekoe's training spot and an object that was most likely a gas burner. This all seems to indicate that the electric stove was once a gas stove.
kitchen_sunmida_burner
kitchen_sunmida_flame
kitchen_sunmida_inferno
sfx_papamama.ssm papamama_hato_j
A delightfully silly fanfare of unknown purpose.
sfx_sample.ssm kitchen_error
An error noise.
kitchen_renge_end
These sound like noises for operating a microwave. It's possible they were used for operating the stove. They play in an unused menu called MenuSound.
kitchen_renge_set
kitchen_renge_start
letickers_bridge_op
Unused sounds for the Utilibots.
letickers_bridge_op2
letickers_kitikiti
letickers_mepachi
menu_count
Miscellaneous unused sounds. menu_damage (low battery), menu_pi (day almost done), menu_pin (day done), and menu_stoping (recharging complete) are all used.
menu_recover
npc_papa_a
Unused voice samples for Mr. Sanderson. A similarly-named sample, npc_papa_mupyokakkoee, is used when Mr. Sanderson shouts dramatically.
npc_papa_aiya
npc_papa_ao
npc_papa_ou
npc_papa_ou2
npc_papa_ou3
npc_papa_ou4
npc_papa_ouiya
system_new_bafafafa
Miscellaneous voice samples for unknown purposes. system_new_pon3 (selecting in a menu), system_new_roku (moving the cursor in a menu), system_new_rururu (cancelling in a menu), and system_new_syaf (trying to select something you cannot) are all used. These sounds all play in an unused menu called MenuSound.
system_new_chirochiro
system_new_dohoosu
system_new_ke
system_new_kui
system_new_oufu
system_pause
A short, shrill noise that is thankfully not used for the final pause menu.
system_request
A duplicate of the Chibi-Radar sound effect, it may have had something to do with the "Request" option in the debug room shun. Another sound named system_request_clear plays when all Chibi-Doors are opened, but also plays in an unused stripped-down menu called MenuRequestClear, indicating this was its original purpose.
voice_key
The sound of a key being pressed on a keyboard.
voice_mail
A voice sample that seems to be for someone receiving an email. An email system would not be present in the Chibi-Robo series until Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder.
sfx_stage05.ssm stage05_powerup
Possibly meant for upgrading?
sfx_stage07.ssm npc_smd_break
Unused sound effects for Peekoe breaking. Unused text in stage15 has someone warning not to break Peekoe, as he is a delicate honeymoon souvenir. The scream would be used at a slightly higher pitch for one of Takamaru's screams in Captain Rainbow.
npc_smd_zekyo
