Gran Turismo 5/Game Items/Tuning Parts

From The Cutting Room Floor

This is a sub-page of Gran Turismo 5/Game Items.

Building off of Gran Turismo 4, this game introduced the most feature-rich vehicle customization of the series upon release, adding more visual customization and new tuning parts to further improve performance. A lot of these tuning parts were already present in previous Gran Turismo games, but there were also some new ones added. Yet, not all tuning parts from Gran Turismo 4 made it over to this game...at least, not into the player's hands. This page aims to document all of the unused tuning parts hidden within the game.

It is worth noting that a majority of these tuning parts cannot be fitted on most of the new cars in this game, as they are similar to the equivelant parts found in Gran Turismo 4, perhaps even reusing some of the same data. For example, if the Nissan SKYLINE GT-R (R32) '89, a car present in both GT4 and GT5, can fit a Stage 4 Turbo Kit from GT4, then it can fit a Super High RPM Turbo Kit, which is the part's equivalent from GT4, in GT5. Additionally, none of these items are present in the game's Tune Shop and must be manually added to the player's inventory via hacking or modifications to the save data.

Hmmm...
To do:
Compile a list of cars that can accept these unused parts on this page's Notes page.

Body/Chassis

Weight Reduction

Normally there are three stages of weight reduction that can be performed on vehicles to reduce their weight, but hidden in the game's data are two additional stages, Stage 4 and Stage 5.

Stage 4

  • Price: 50,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Reduce weight further by replacing some of the base materials that make up the car with lighter alternatives. This will improve acceleration and cornering performance."

Stage 5

  • Price: 100,000 Cr
  • Description: "Reduce weight by replacing body panels with ones made from high-strength, ultra-light carbon fiber. This will improve acceleration and cornering performance."

Engine

NA Tuning Stages

Normally there are three stages of NA engine tuning that can be performed on vehicles to increase power and engine revs, but hidden in the game's data are two additional stages, Stage 4 and Stage 5.

Stage 4

  • Price: 75,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Reduce friction within the engine in order to increase torque and RPM."

Stage 5

  • Price: 100,000 Cr
  • Description: "Increase displacement and perform complete racing modifications to the combustion chamber and valvetrain in order to increase torque and RPM."

Intake

Throttle Response Improvement/Improved Accelerator Response

A unique but unused tuning part.

  • Price: 5,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Independent throttle bodies are installed to improve the response of the engine to accelerator pedal input."

Exhaust

Catalytic Converter: Racing

While a catalytic converter upgrade is present in the game, this one went unused. As the version that can be purchased and/or installed from the Tune Shop is labelled as a Sports version, this part would have supplemented it as the more premium part.

  • Price: 4,000 Cr.
  • Description: "The catalytic converter removes pollutants from exhaust gases. This specially designed racing cat reduces the amount of exhaust resistance in order to improve output at high revs."

Turbo Kits

Super High RPM Turbo Kit

This particular tuning part is similar to the Stage 4 Turbo Kit from Gran Turismo 4, in that most cars present from that game (that are also present in this game) which could fit that part are able to fit this part.

  • Price: 100,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A large diameter turbo designed for maximum power. Power is reduced in the low RPM range, but kicks in explosively at higher revs."

Ultra High RPM Turbo Kit

Like the previous tuning part above, this particular tuning part is similar to the Original Turbine Kit from Gran Turismo 4 (although similar only in maximum power output, not low-RPM response), in that most cars present from that game (that are also present in this game) which could fit that part should be able to fit this part.

  • Price: 120,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A specially designed extra-large turbo. The engine itself must have the ability to reach a high RPM range in order for this part to be truly effective."

Drivetrain

Clutch: Triple-Plate

While single-plate and twin-plate clutch tuning parts are available to purchase in the game, this triple-plate upgrade went unused.

  • Price: 5,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Reduce clutch diameter even further by using three clutch plates. This will improve engine response and allow quicker gear changes."

Flywheel: Racing

While Sports and Semi-Racing flywheel upgrades are available to purchase in the game, this Racing upgrade is not.

  • Price: 4,000 Cr.
  • Description: "This ultra-lightweight flywheel enables the engine to change speed rapidly, improving response, while still stabilizing engine rotation at low revs."

Brakes

The "Brakes" category is absent from the Tune Shop in this game. While the category is present in the Car Settings, in which cars are able to have a Brake Controller configured, no brake upgrades are able to be purchased. This category as well as purchaseable brake upgrades would eventually return in Gran Turismo 6, however there would be only one tuning part available to purchase as compared to the four listed below.

Large Diameter Rotors + 4 Piston Calipers

  • Price: 3,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Brakes with opposed 4-piston calipers and standard rotors. Suitable for sports driving in lightweight cars."

Large Diameter Rotors + 6 Piston Calipers

  • Price: 5,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Brakes with opposed 6-piston calipers and large-diameter rotors. Suitable for circuit driving in most cars."

Large Diameter Rotors + 8 Piston Calipers

  • Price: 10,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Brakes with opposed 8-pistons calipers and large-diameter rotors with high thermal capacity and cooling efficiency. They have the power to handle heavy cars in tough racing conditions."

Ceramic Carbon Brakes

  • Price: 20,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Ultra-high-performance brakes with ceramic-coated sintered carbon rotors. Their lightweight construction improves acceleration and deceleration performance."

Tires

Unlike the exception listed at the beginning of this page, all cars in the game are able to fit all tire types (regardless if they are able to be purchased from the Tune Shop or not) with the use of hacking or modifications to a car's data. This means that, for example, you can drive off-road with a Formula Gran Turismo or any of the NASCAR stock cars. This also applies for the unused parts below.

(C) and (V) Tires

There exist "Type C" and "Type V" variants for all tires in the game (which includes the unused Super-Soft variants but excludes off-road and rain tires). They have the same price as their base items, and also have description text that copies the base description of their base item with an additional sentence and the end of the description that explains their unique characteristics:

  • (C) Tires: "Type C tires are designed with an emphasis on horizontal grip."
  • (V) Tires: "Type V tires are designed with an emphasis on grip in the inline direction."

Sports: Super Soft

An unused Sports tire type.

This tire also appeared on early Gran Turismo Sport kiosk demo builds, but was also removed from the final game.

  • Price: 10,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Super-soft sports tires that can also be used for circuit driving. They have high grip even at low temperatures, but suffer from poor durability."

Racing: Super Soft

An unused Racing tire type. This tire type would eventually return in Gran Turismo Sport. These tyres can be seen being used by Sebastian Vettel in a promotional video for the Sebastian Vettel X Challenge, suggesting the ghost laps might have been set on this tire type.

  • Price: 50,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Slick tires designed for racing in dry conditions. Made from a super-soft compound that sacrifices durability for the sake of maximum grip."

Others

Nitrous

Nitrous, a very popular tuning part from Gran Turismo 4, was supposed to return in this game, but ultimately didn't. What's unusual is that there are several parts available that range from various durations instead of being able to adjust between duration and output, like in the previous game. Unfortunately, even if a nitrous tuning part is installed, there is no way to utilize its functionality; even if the nitrous functionality was coded into the game, the game is actually missing the customizable input binding to activate it.

Nitrous made a return in Gran Turismo 6.

Nitro: 5 Seconds

  • Price: 500 Cr.
  • Description: "A system that injects nitrous oxide into the cylinders to increase engine power by 30% for up to 5 seconds."

Nitro: 10 Seconds

  • Price: 1,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A system that injects nitrous oxide into the cylinders to increase engine power by 30% for up to 10 seconds."

Nitro: 20 Seconds

  • Price: 2,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A system that injects nitrous oxide into the cylinders to increase engine power by 30% for up to 20 seconds."

Nitro: 30 Seconds

  • Price: 3,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A system that injects nitrous oxide into the cylinders to increase engine power by 30% for up to 30 seconds."

Nitro: 60 Seconds

  • Price: 6,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A system that injects nitrous oxide into the cylinders to increase engine power by 30% for up to 60 seconds."

Nitro: 90 Seconds

  • Price: 12,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A system that injects nitrous oxide into the cylinders to increase engine power by 30% for up to 90 seconds."

Nitro: 120 Seconds

  • Price: 15,000 Cr.
  • Description: "A system that injects nitrous oxide into the cylinders to increase engine power by 30% for up to 120 seconds."

Special Gasoline

Internally coded as "SPECIAL_GAS", these tuning "parts" would have increased a car's power by a certain percentage. Judging from the items' descriptions, it is uncertain whether or not these items are either one-time consumables, or "parts" that permanently affected the car's power. It is also unknown if these items directly affect a car's "Power Multiplier" as defined within its car data, or simply multiply the car's current power value by the percentage given on the item for a resulting new power value.

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: These items are a curiosity. Do they affect a car's power multiplier or just the car's power value? Also, do they still even function as intended in the game?

5% Power Improvement

  • Price: 1,000 Cr.
  • Description: "Increases the engine's power by 5%, by adding an additive to the fuel. This is effective until the end of the race or until the fuel tank is empty."
