Mega Turrican is considered to be the third main entry in the Turrican series and the first to be made without the involvement of series creator Manfred Trenz. It shows, for better or worse, thanks to the game's more linear, "Japanese-style" stage design and the removal of the Surround weapon in favor of a Super Castlevania IV-inspired grappling beam.

It was completed in Spring 1993, around the same time as Super Turrican's release, but didn't come out until around a year later since Factor 5 couldn't find a publisher.

Sprites of Mario and Sonic seemingly frozen in carbonite are found in the VRAM tiles of the first stage. Judging by a screenshot in the game's development diary in German magazine Amiga Games, these were to appear shortly after the first miniboss.

Unused Music

This song is easily accessible through the sound test as track 11, but it never appears in-game. It resembles part of a track from its Amiga port, Turrican 3, where the song did actually appear in-game (albeit extended).

Virtual Console

The game was rereleased for the Wii Virtual Console in 2008 with some changes. Unlike most edited Virtual Console games, which use patches, the changes to Mega Turrican were baked into the ROM itself.

The ROM's file name is "MegaTurrican_JUE_noDECO.SGD". As it suggests, all references to Data East were removed from the game.

Factor 5's address at the end of the credits was also updated.
