To do:
Document changes from the second Direct:
  • Twisters looked different in the SMB3 style in certain clips.
  • SMB3 used a brown tileset for the Underground theme (shown at 3:31 in the American Direct).

Nintendo Direct February 2019

  • The Twisters in the Super Mario World style have a different look. In the same level shown with these early twisters, the coin farthest left of the screen is missing, though it's possible this is because the player had picked it up.
  • The Super Bell in the Super Mario 3D World style is colored differently.
  • The 10 Coin icon in the SM3DW style is just a normal coin with a 10 on it.
  • The Ground Theme icon is the same one used in the first Super Mario Maker.
  • The Underground Theme icon looks much simpler than in the final game.
  • The Snow Theme icon looks slightly different.
  • The Underwater Theme icon looks very different.
  • The icon to switch between parts and sound effects is different. Soundfrog has a smaller mouth and slightly different closed eyes, and both Partrick and Soundfrog are colored a bit differently.
  • The handle of the magnifying glass icon is dark blue instead of orange.
  • The bird that appears after selecting Custom Scroll looks more like a parakeet.
  • The icon to set where Custom scroll will scroll is a feather rather than a scroll path.
  • The Custom Scroll menu had a lot of differences. The birds look very different, the line connecting the birds looks like a red laser, and the icon that shows that the scroll speed is set to normal is colored yellow instead of red.
  • The Clear Condition icon is completely different.
  • Many icons for items in the SM3DW style use the New Super Mario Bros. U style's icons, possibly as placeholders.
  • Some icons for items in the SM3DW style use icons from the 3D World Guide by Prima Games, also possibly as placeholders.
  • The Spike Block in the SM3DW style parts menu is located in the first page of Terrain instead of the third page of Gizmos.
  • The Question Mark Block and Brick Block in the parts menu have their locations swapped.
  • The Super Bell in the parts menu is located between the One-Up Mushroom and Coin.
  • The Porcupuffer in the parts menu is located in the first page of Enemies instead of the fourth page.
  • The Bully in the parts menu is located in the second page of Enemies instead of the fourth page. Also, all the enemies in the second page are in different spots.
  • There are 2 skulls used as decoration tiles to be seen in the New Super Mario Bros. U forest theme in the night setting.
  • The Super Bell tree section of Hello, 3D World! is seemingly earlier in the level, as evident by the background's location.
  • The Underground section of Hello, 3D World! was originally in the desert theme, the Goomba is missing, and the ground to the left holding a 10 Coin is instead a staircase of brick blocks. This was likely part of a completely different and cut level.
Trailer Final
SMM2 Hello 3D World underground early.png SMM2 Hello 3D World underground final.png
  • The Under the Angry Sun level was originally in the SMB3 style instead of NSMBU. Also, the parachute Goomba that appears after the winged Propeller Mushroom (in this case a Super Leaf) doesn't exist.
  • The Snake Blocks in the Sky level was original in the NSMBU style instead of SMB. There is an alternate version of the level shown in the trailer where the Snake Block is a Fast Snake Block, and in this footage are 2 Question Mark Blocks that were off screen in the previous shot.
  • In River Fish in the Forest, the yellow mushroom platform was replaced with a pipe that spawns Yoshi eggs, and a checkpoint was added to the green mushroom platform behind that. 3 coins were added to a yellow mushroom platform after the added pipe.

Japanese Website Videos

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: A lot of this is probably due to the footage being recorded with no music (or even SFX) and it being added in post-production.

These show an early version of the game which is missing a lot of SFX in the editor (including the voices), and oddly uses Super Mario Bros. 3 music as placeholders for the SM3DW music before they were implemented. Some videos also include an early version of the SM3DW coin sound.

World Maker Update Trailer

  • Larry, Wendy, and Ludwig use their SMB3 designs in the SMW theme.
