Duke Nukem: Critical Mass (PlayStation Portable)
This game was never completed and/or given a public release. As a result of this, keep in mind that the developers might have used or deleted some of the content featured here, had the game actually been released. |
Duke Nukem: Critical Mass |
---|
Developer: Frontline Studios
|
Rather than being a mediocre side scroller, the PSP version is more a throwback to Duke's 3D adventures on consoles. Strangely its source code was discovered to have ended up in the US Library of Congress. Multiple builds and the source code were released by Obscure Gamers and Unseen64 on April 5th, 2022.
To do: Prioritise unused content found across the builds here, with differences/unique content between builds on a proto page. |

Bombshell
7 years after laying of their workforce, Gearbox Software finishing the mess they could not finish and not one but two lawsuits with Gearbox over the Duke IP. 3D Realms is back with a new game, Bombshell!
Well, can't say they didn't try at least...
Not only was the namesake of this game planned as a supporting character in Duke Nukem Forever, but this game was originally a Duke game called Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction.

Unused Animations
{{subpage|Unused Animations|text="What? Did you think I would just stay stuck in a pre-rendered .bik ''forever?''"}}
This is a sub-page of User:Mantis.
Duke Nukem Forever's animations exist in anims.dat and animsdir.dat in SkinMeshes.
Prerendered Video Animations
While techinically used, many animations seen in pre-rendered videos of the game exist amongst the animations and as such aren't used. Either leftover due to such sequences being rendered real time or more simply unintentionally left in.

Proto:Duke Nukem Forever/2001/Music
This is a sub-page of User:Mantis.
The prototypes feature a couple of songs made by composer Lee Jackson. Jackson later left 3D Realms and subsequently production of Duke Nukem Forever sometime in 2002. None of the tracks featured here made there way into the final game. The following tracks are sorted by their copyright metadata.

Planet Forbidden
Planet Forbidden On June 29th 2022, Jackson would release the full WAV, where he provided some commentary about the track.[1]
Planet Forbidden is an unused ambience file from Duke Nukem Forever, created by me around mid-2000 or so. It's made up of several segments, both ambient and action alike, that were intended to loop separately from the whole WAV file. What is presented here is the original WAV file in its entirety.
The filename is a tribute to the science fiction classic film, "Forbidden Planet," and especially to the groundbreaking score created by Bebe and Louis Barron. (I actually received notes from Bebe Barron while creating "Planet Forbidden," with information about things like how her husband would build new electronic circuits and burn them out just to get a single sound for the soundtrack.) The filename is also a bit of a joke, reversed in the way that a certain "backwards" friend spoke to Dr. McCoy in "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock."
I do not remember exactly which of my synths were involved in the creation of this file, but the ones I did use came from the following group:
Kurzweil K2500RS
Kawai K5000R
Roland SC-88
E-Mu E4XT

Featured Article
Developers: 3D Realms, Triptych Games, Gearbox Software, Pirahna Games
Publishers: 2K Games, Aspyr Media (Mac), 1C Company (Russia)
Developmental Timeline: 1996-2011
Released: Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Mac OS X
The development of Duke Nukem Forever is perhaps no greater example of feature creep, development hell and vaporware.
Starting in early-mid 1996 as a side-scroller project by New Zealand-based developers. In December 1996, developers at 3D Realms would begin experimenting with the Quake engine. The game would receive a highly memorable trailer at E3 2001. Development would continue throughout the 2000s as more and more delays were announced, with the only prospective release date being "when its done".
In May 2009, 3D Realms would lay off all their workforce and cease development on the game. Former developers would then form Triptych Games to continue development at their homes. Gearbox would pick up the game and announced in September 2010 that they would be releasing and finishing the game, with help from Tryptych and Pirahna Games. After one more delay, the game was finally released in June 2011 to rather lukewarm reception.
Much information gathered shows 3D Realms had a very ambitious game in mind, ambition of which become a major factor leading into the game's troubled production. All these years later, it does make for an interesting read.
DNF Leaked Images
A press kit made by x0r_jmp would leak alongside the 2001 builds in 2022.
To do: Not sure what I want to do with these, putting them here for now. |
Backburner
- Duke Nukem 3D (Xbox 360) - Need to see if there is any unused content exclusive to this release.
- Duke Nukem Forever (Atari 2600) - Some April Fools thing 3D Realms did back in 2003, there could possibly be something of note in it like a dev message.
- Duke Nukem Forever Soundboard - Soundboard app for iOS.
- Need to investigate if the XBLA version of Manhattan Project is identical/similar to the Windows version.
- The editor.dll in DNF.

- Duke Nudem - Some promotional flash game for DNF, probably need to get permission first.
