Gran Turismo Sport/Courses

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Gran Turismo Sport.

What was mentioned on the Cars page can also apply here to the Courses; development was spent on the courses baking in the lighting ovens at Polyphony Digital for some great looking environments, but that unfortunately affects the course count...for now. While the developers play catch-up, some things were left behind.

Driving Park Classic

Contained in the game's course logos are two files, "DRIVINGPARK_02" and "DRIVINGPARK_03", which resemble the classic Driving Park logo from both Gran Turismo 4 and Gran Turismo 5. Both files are copies of the same logo image. The logo appears to have been redrawn in a higher resolution for this game. However, judging by the adjacent filenames, there is not enough information to determine if this was simply the old logo before they came up with the idea of Kyoto Driving Park, whose logo image is "DRIVINGPARK_01" respectively, or was another course entirely.

Kyoto Driving Park - Square

An empty lot course that isn't used anywhere in the game. Judging by the markings on the surface of the tarmac in the image, is in fact a gymkhana course. A gymkhana course was last seen in Gran Turismo 4...set in Driving Park, naturally, and this game would have seen the return of such a course in well over a decade for the franchise. While currently inaccessible and hidden, the course is still visible in-game, however, and can be seen during gameplay during the pre-race menu screen in any of the "Yamagiwa + Miyabi" layouts of Kyoto Driving Park; one of the camera angles will give a wide field-of-view and expose the course at the top of the screen. While it can be seen, it cannot be reached and thus driven on in-game.

Tokyo Expressway

The image below depicts an extremely low detailed version of one of the Tokyo Expressway layouts (specifically the East layouts). Either this image was from an in-development version of the course, or was a placeholder until a proper image was put in its place.

"TEST_PWY_OVAL"

The image below, whose filename is "TEST_PWY_OVAL", depicts the Northern Isle Speedway course at what appears to be a midnight scenario. The image is not seen anywhere in-game; its purpose is unknown. Perhaps it was meant for the "Inline" layout of the course?

Sardegna - "Layout 01"

This image depicts what appears to be a very early rendition of the Sardegna dirt course. There's almost no detail present, and just the pathway, barriers, elevation, landscape and background scenery can be seen. What's unusual about this image is its filename, "WILDERNESS_02_LAYOUT01". The image that depicts the final version of this course has a filename of "WILDERNESS_02_LAYOUT02", indicating that this image is either a hidden, unused layout of the course, or is simply, as aforementioned, a very early rendition of it. Some pre-release screenshots depict what looks like this course being driven on by Group B cars. Whatever the case, not enough information is known.

Colorado Springs - "Layout 02"

Very similar to the course above, this image depicts what appears to be a very early rendition of the Colorado Springs dirt course, yet again with almost no detail present, with the pathway, barriers, elevation, landscape and background scenery visible. There's also a rather low-quality reflection in the water of what appears to be a small city, but is nowhere to be seen in the background. As for the filename, it appears to be the reverse case scenario here, as the filename for the image that depicts the final version of this course is "WILDERNESS_03_LAYOUT01"; this image has the filename of "WILDERNESS_03_LAYOUT02". Once again, it is unable to be determined if this is either a hidden, unused layout of the course, or once again a very early rendition of it.

GT7SP CRS RENDER P005.png

Found in an updated version of the game is this course. The image above is a rendering depicting the course's pathway and basic geometry. It is not present in the game's playable roster. No internal name or any sort of reference to this course is present in the game files. However, the course's accompanying textures and filename suggest that this course is used during Home Screen Demonstration reel that advertises the new cars of a new update (used until version 1.15), essentially a "Photo Mode" course. "Photo Mode" courses like these were previously used in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and the full release of the aforementioned title to display shots of cars during various FMVs, but the "courses" themselves were not left over in the game's data, unlike this course.
