Super Mario FX myth?

So, although that idea that Super Mario 64 began with a supposed game called 'Super Mario FX' has since been shown to be false, should we clarify that in this page, for people reading this page? --TGlitschen (talk) 17:12, 27 January 2016 (EST)

Nintendomania E3 1996

Dunno if any of this has been covered in the article. But I found an upload of an episode of this Mexican games show called Nintendomania which covered E3 1996. Video here. SM64 footage starts around 5 minutes in. (Also includes Pilotwings 64 and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.) --Rabidabid (talk) 18:02, 11 October 2017 (EDT)

Famitsu clip

Here's a Famitsu ad with a few seconds of early footage. Different HUD and everything. --Rabidabid (talk) 21:37, 10 March 2019 (EDT)

And now, here's the Space World '95 episode of Famitsu's Game Catalogue. Much more footage. --Rabidabid (talk) 20:10, 7 April 2019 (EDT)

Earlier Promotional Shoshinkai ‘95 Build Info

Dunno if this is pertinent in any way to anything on this page, but I still found it interesting nonetheless. A French video game magazine called Consoles + had an issue in January 1996 which actually explains the reason behind the HUD and power meter in some Super Mario 64 prerelease footage from 1995 being different on one page:

"Some photos that you will find in other video game magazines and in the pages of this article were distributed by Nintendo of Japan. They are very pretty... but these are not the photos of the version of the game presented at Shoshinkai! Even if these photos are very similar to the version of Super Mario 64 presented at the expo, they do not come from the same version. They seem to come from a developer's version of the game that's running on an SGI Workstation, not a Nintendo 64 console! These images [Nintendo's photos] are a little bit more polished, with clearer colours than images from the expo. On the other hand, the characters, animations, and scenery are identical (apart from a few textures...). You can identify official photos from Nintendo by taking note that in official photos, the life counter has the word "Pow" with letters in multiple colours. The photos of the game presented at the expo don't follow the same format, instead including the full word 'Power' and a needle."

Can you recognize the level at 1:05?

Computer Channel Games World E6 Shoshinkai SM64.png

Here is a recently uploaded beta footage: Super Mario 64 Beta Footage (Computer Channel Games World: E6) Can you recognize the level on the middle TV screen at 1:05? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Purcell (talk • contribs)

Well, the middle TV looks to me like Lethal Lava Land, the one on the right seems to be the Tall Tall Mountain slide (which in this demo was in Cool Cool Mountain), and the left one that's harder to see might not even be a SM64 kiosk. --EgocentricPlasticMan (talk) 15:55, 1 April 2019 (EDT)
Bumping because the old link is dead, so here's a new one. Regarding the screencap, I'm pretty sure the left monitor isn't SM64 (the English name listed, whatever it is, is longer). The footage also gets about half of the monitor that's just offscreen to the right in this image, which isn't for SM64 either (though, again, I'm not sure what it is). -WarioBarker (talk) 20:23, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

"Unused Peach Lip Texture"

This texture is in fact still in the final rom. Here's the textures, uncompressed, viewed in a memory visualizer:

And it's not even unused... During the ending scene where peach open her eyes and sees Mario Peach uses it on the first "Mario!" --User:ConsUme

Terrifying Cursed Mo-cap Mario

"A picture of the model in the making can be seen in a Dengeki Super Famicom article for an "improved Super FX chip" that was intended to have a Mario Paint-like software tool. It also seemed that Mario's expressions were apparently motion-captured."

I believe that this isn't actually the case: that image seems to be a photograph of a work-in-progress Mario In Real Time, better known as the cursed beast that roamed Mario Teaches Typing 2 (aka "Mario Head") and CES '92. There's actually more footage of Martinet with the rig, too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1t6iNG28zI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0U75CDCP4Y

Millstone Madness

So this is a super-minor point but the description below the clockwise millstone rotation image currently references Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Galaxy 2. In DKC it's just.... enemies inside of large wheels, that the level's title - Millstone Mayhem - implies are millstones. I don't really think it has anything to do with Super Mario 64's development? I haven't played Galaxy 2 to know how related the Clockwork Ruins Galaxy part is to the concept art, so I've left both references in place for now.

I did remove the line "Millstone Mayhem was also likely inspired from another concept sketch with Mario being chased by a giant boulder." though; Millstone Mayhem contains no such boulder chase, and even if it did it would likely be referencing the famous scene from Indiana Jones just as the concept art here is. - S SoNick (talk) 00:24, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Notice

I am updating gameplay and physics to a missing part that is not mentioned often

August - B-Roll footage? Any references/proof?

"August - B-Roll footage and screenshots are recorded for the up-and-coming Space World"

Is there any proof of this? I mean, it looks pretty darn close to the actual SpaceWorld 1995 demo aside from a different LLL arrangement (more spread out in SW)

Can we get info from witnesses of Spaceworld/Shoshinkai 1995?

Back when I used the BrewmasterLo account I found something that was so obvious, however it was not even mentioned, so in the discussion page of Prerelease: Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64), If you don't know what I'm referring to, Don't worry, not even the creators of the Preservation Project know it's a thing, even though its clearly in this page, the line "Mario, after taking large fall damage or respawning after dying in a painting world, visibly struggles to get up. This was changed in the final, possibly to keep the animation short (and less morbid); this can be seen here and here." was originally created by me (The "and less morbid" part was not added by me though) which showed that the very obvious difference in the respawn and large fall damage animations, I suspect the reason no one else caught this is in the videos beforehand was because no one looked hard enough, or somehow collectively skipped that part of the video that showed the animation difference (which I doubt), that's why I propose to, if possible, contact the people who were actually at Shoshinkai 1995 event, if they are still alive and/or willing to explain anything, this may seem like a 1 time thing, except it has happened again, I feel like I'm the only one to notice the Walking in water animation from the Gigaleak is different than the one in the Spaceworld demo. A similar message is on the Prerelease 1995 page and the main talk page of Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)- Sincerely, BrewmasterLo --BrewmasterLo2 (talk) 13:54, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Questions about the timeline section

The timeline section mentions some unusually specific stuff (i.e. Blargg was apparently removed in April, Motos, variants and Boo Keys were scrapped sometime in March, and Mario’s voice being finalized in December) - where did this info come from? Were these dates found in the iQue leak? Or were they mentioned in interviews? -BlazingD (talk) 15:11, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, it seems like each of these should have references added. I've put a note in the todo box. --Hiccup (talk) 10:11, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Early E3 Courtyard

Someone seems to remember an E3 courtyard picture taken in the pool. Can you find it? --Shark

Sources for the 1996 Interviews

Hey, new here so sorry if I don't format this correctly or am doing something wrong, but I've been doing research into the development of Super Mario 64 for a project, and have been using this page to help source a lot of information. Problem is, the 1996 Developer Interviews don't have any real credible source. Shmuplations, the website these interviews were pulled from, only vaguely says they're from "two official japanese strategy guides", and although I don't want to be rude and call into question the authenticity of these interviews, I have been unsuccessful in getting into contact with the person behind the translated interviews to ask where they came from exactly, and ALSO can't find any trace online of any official game guide with any in depth interviews. I've been going nuts for literal days trying to figure out the source of these interviews, and even joined the discord asking for help, but nobody has responded, so I'm asking here. Thanks in advance. --StupidWizardYT (talk) 16:35, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
