Debug Menu
In the Japanese version, at the title screen, hold Down + A + B and press Start. In the US and EU versions, enter Game Genie code 01A-CAB-E6A and choose Password at the main menu.
There are two digits/symbols in the middle of the screen. The first one is the main mode index, the second one is the submode index. Some of the available modes are treated as levels, so this may cause some glitches. It seems this option was not intended to be available to the regular player, rather than used for debugging on the development stage. They disabled it in the English versions, but seem to forgot to remove it in the Japanese version. The numbers meanings are here in the following list:
- The modes starting from number 0 represents the main game handlers. The available submodes are:
- 0 - Stage number screen display.
- 1 - Credits.
- 2 - Horizontal title screen background.
- 3 - Password screen.
- 4 - Vertical title screen background.
- 5 - Single title screen background.
- The modes starting from numbers from 1 to 6 are representing the regular levels. The second digit may be either a number of sublevel, or a Smile character, representing the Boss stage.
- The modes starting from number 7 represents the locked rooms, which can be found during the game. There are four different options on the second digit:
- 0 - Bank room.
- 1 - Butcher room.
- 2 - Hospital room.
- 3 - Jail room.
- The modes starting from the Smile character are for the Bonus fight stages. For some reason, the font setup is incorrect there, so the actual messages during the bonus level can't be seen. There are three options:
- Empty Heart - Bonus Round 1.
- Half Heart - Bonus Round 2.
- Full Heart - Bonus Round 3.

The "Stealth Bonk" form was changed from a stereotypical Japanese thief to a stereotypical western thief. This change was made because Hudson Soft was scared that the original sprite would meet controversy over a racial stereotype.
