The first real challenger Nintendo faced on the handheld market was a tiny device from Bandai made by none other than the Game Boy creator himself, Gunpei Yokoi. While initially successful, thanks to anime-based licensed games and support from Square and Sony, it couldn't keep up with the competition despite the release of new models with color support added.
Many things are to blame for this: the imminent release of the Game Boy Advance, Dragon Quest games coming for the Game Boy instead, the console being unreleased to the English-speaking world (outside of two games for Hong Kong), and one of the worst sound chips ever to grace the planet.
