Regional Differences

Several changes were made to the North American version, either to meet Nintendo of America's acceptable content guidelines or to make the game a little more visually appealing. These changes were retained in the later European releases.

Text

In the Japanese version, the text is spoken in the first-person perspective of Ace Harding. In the international versions, it's Ace's conscience... or something.

The international releases don't mention an electric chair, presumably at Nintendo's request.

Syringe/Pills

The syringe, as per Nintendo's policies of the time, was changed to medicine capsules in the international releases (which would explain why you never seem to run out).

The Ladies Room

The ladies room was labeled as such in the Japanese version.

Dead Man

The blood was removed in the international releases. Despite this, the blood is still referenced if you examine the desk.

Casino

The casino was almost completely redrawn for the international releases, giving it more vibrant casino-like colors, correcting the perspective on the slot machines, and fixing up the oddly-drawn roulette wheel.

Alligator

The international versions change the color of the dead alligator's blood from red to black.

Game Over

Rest in Peace? More like Rest in NIGHTMARES! Ripped because he wasn't so Acey 'n Harding.

The international versions replace the creepy, slightly bloody skull with a very plain gravestone... that also happens to spoil the main character's name. Oops!
