Hmmm...
To do:
Is this actually pre-final?

A Demo Version was released in September 2014 in two forms: a Special Demo Version for select Club Nintendo Platinum members (using an eShop download code which could be redeemed in order to play the demo) on the 12th, and an "official" public release on the 19th. The only difference between the two is that the latter is limited to 30 uses.

A total of five characters are playable: Mario, Link, Pikachu, Villager, and Mega Man. There are also several other limitations in the demo: several different menu areas are grayed out, and while the rest of the initial cast is displayed in the character select screen and several of their other assets display on hovering, they can't be selected nor played as. The stage select screen is limited to Battlefield and Omega Battlefield, with Omega mode forcing items off for the match, although a 2-minute time limit is also forced and unchangeable.

Graphical Differences

Character select screen icons, rather than using post processing at runtime, were grayed out in the image data itself (excluding playable characters). This is also the case with most of the menu selection graphics.

Unused Data

While the demo only allows Battlefield to be played, it contains stage data for several other stages, which includes non-Omega variants of Mario 3D Land, Tortimer Island, Spirit Train, and Prism Tower. These stages were presumably going to be one for each character to fight on, however the data went unused for the actual demo release. These stages can be loaded by editing ui/param/trial_stage_mask.bin, however they will sometimes crash on loading with more than two characters.

Stage song data appears to be absent, which results in having no music on these stages. These stages can also be accessed via local multiplayer given one hacked 3DS forcing its choice to one of the inaccessible stages.
