The Game Boy version of The King of Fighters '95 is a port of the Neo Geo fighting game, with a special guest appearance by Nakoruru of the Samurai Shodown series a good 20 years before she actually joined the series in KOF XIV!

DIP Switches

There are a set of internal game flags called "DIP SW(itches)". Each flag, when set, enable one of the corresponding features. To set any of these flags, at the TAKARA logo enter a particular button combination from the table below to get a corresponding effect. Every time one of the flags are set, the corresponding sound will be heard. Note, some of the features available are only in Super Game Boy mode. To see what DIP switches are enabled, go to the options screen. At the bottom of the screen there will be a string "DIPSW-XX", where XX is a hexadecimal sum of all enabled DIP switch bits (see HEX values below, sum them in hexadecimal format to get the resulting display number).

For both Game Boy and Super Game Boy:

  • Hold A + B, press Select 1 time (bit 5, HEX 20) - Allow to select all the same characters in the "TEAM" game mode for one team.
  • Press Select 3 times (bit 6, HEX 40) - Unlocks Saisyu and Rugal extra characters. Also these characters may be unlocked if you complete the game on "NORMAL" mode.
  • Press Select 20 times (bit 7, HEX 80) - Unlocks Nakoruru extra character. Also this character may be unlocked if you beat the game on "HARD" mode.

For Super Game Boy only:

  • Press Select 25 times (bit 3, HEX 08) - Activates infinite "MAXIMUM" gauge meter for both players.
  • Hold A + B + Left, press Select 30 times (bits 2 and 4, HEX 14) - Enables the SGB Sound test mode at options menu. Also enables two special move shortcuts: during the game, press either Select + B or Select + A to perform one of two most powerful moves for a corresponding character.

Note, that because of how specific the code input and check methods are, all button presses are counted at the same time, so if you enter one of the codes, you are already entering all the others. So if you just quickly press Select at least 25 times, at least three codes will be enabled at once. To unlock all flags at once, first, hold A + B, press Select once, while still holding those buttons, hold additionally Left, then press Select very quickly 30 times. When you hear a final explosion sound that means all codes are activated.

The Takara logo is rather plain and in an oval for the Japanese version. The international versions made the logo red and fancier, with circles in some of the lettering.

The title screen was translated for its overseas release, and the SGB border was made darker. The logos on the border were also translated.
