This page details one or more prototype versions of Ninja Gaiden (NES).

A late American localization prototype of Ninja Gaiden was sold by Matt Lewis, a former Nintendo employee, to Danny Tatro, who was responsible for dumping and releasing the ROM on the Nintendo Player website.

Since the game is practically finished as every level and cutscene is present in the data, there are only a few noticeable visual differences.

General Differences

  • Defeating Jaquio's first form will count down the player's score and reset the game, likely to prevent players from beating the entire game. The rest of the Jaquio boss and the ending scene are present in the game's data and can be accessed through hacking.

Dialogue Differences

Proto Final
Damn, He's awake.
Argh! He's awake.

Altered due to Nintendo of America's content policies, which also resulted in correcting a typo in which the H in "He's" is uppercase after a comma. Despite the change, the old version is still present in the final ROM at address 0x1AA0A.

Proto Final
So this is the hell
that Malth was talking
about.
What shall I do?
So this is my destiny
Malth was telling the
truth.
What shall I do?

Aside from "hell" being ousted due to NoA policy, the dialogue was altered to be more formal. Again, the old text is still present in the final ROM, in this case at address 0x1AB27.
