This page sucks.
If you could make it suck less, that would be awesome.
Specifically: Poorly organized, poorly written, filled with todos and awfully outdated. This game deserves a much better page.
Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Does this content apply to the console versions?

15 years ago, this game sold over 4.7 million copies worldwide in 24 hours, and the world just fucking watched.

Cut Vehicles

The L-Train

This was planned to be used as an interactive element in at least one multiplayer map. However, none of the released maps feature an inner-city transit system, so it's not known where it could be used. Scripts and the kill icon still exist in the game data.

Based on scripting, it would have a 24-car length, and would rumble through the map at 1200 units per second every 100-200 seconds, shaking the screens of anybody nearby and killing anyone stupid enough to be standing in the way.

CODMW2LTrain death.png

MH-6 Little Bird

The MH-6 Little Bird is seen in the campaign and when you call in a Care Package, but unused coding and sound files shows that at one time it was a killstreak. Modders have restored the Little Bird and it can be used normally as a kill streak reward through modding. It's equipped Javelin Missiles and a minigun, but it doesn't always shoot at other players.

Default Vehicle

An untextured model that barely resembles a car. Obviously meant for testing.

Cut Weapons

  • Remington 870: Only a texture sheet remains in the game files, nothing else.
(Source: Remington 870 - Call of Duty Wiki)
  • Power Drill: A file for this weapon is, internally named "powerdrill", is present. Where it would've been used is anybody's guess.
  • MP-44: One of many leftovers from the original Modern Warfare. It's CAC icon, as well as it's model-related images still exist among the game files. The sound files for it are also still present, but have a slightly higher pitch compared to the previous game's sounds.
  • MP5: One of many leftovers from the original Modern Warfare. It's CAC icon, as well as it's model-related images still exist among the game files. The sound files where overwritten by the current ones, and the model was used as a placeholder for a gas mask on the singeplayer map Contingency.
  • G3: Files remain mentioning this. It was seen in some early screenshots.
(Source: G3 - Call of Duty Wiki)
  • G36C: Unused texture sheet, HUD icon, Create A Class icon, and textures for its Call of Duty 4 Red Dot Sight remain. It is obtainable via modding by executing the console command "give g36c_reflex" on the map "so_bridge".
(Source: G36C - Call of Duty Wiki)
  • L85: Only a texture sheet and HUD icon remain. It's interesting to note it's HUD icon is used for the L86 LSW in multiplayer, as well as in earlier singeplayer missions.
  • Gold Desert Eagle: Files for the Gold Desert Eagle from the original Modern Warfare still remain. Unlike other unused weapons, it's fully complete, and it can be used normally in multiplayer with help from a class editor.
(Source: Desert Eagle - Call of Duty Wiki)
  • MG4 Scope: The MG4 had a scope attachment at some point. It is still possible to obtain by modifying the weapon file to not hide the tag.
(Source: MG4 - Call of Duty Wiki)
  • M40A3: All files related to the M40A3 remain scattered around among different singeplayer maps. It is possible to obtain it via modding.
  • R700: All files related to the R700 remain scattered around among different singeplayer maps. It is possible to obtain it via modding.
  • M249 SAW: All files related to the M249 SAW remain scattered around among different singeplayer maps. It is possible to obtain it via modding. Interestingly enough, it appears to be the only gun from the original Modern Warfare that has working tags, and is only obtainable on maps which have Juggernauts on them. It is also loaded into the memory on the multiplayer map "Karachi", but is non-usable.
  • M60E4: All files related to the M40A3 remain scattered around among different singeplayer maps. It is possible to obtain it via modding.
  • M4A1 Cloth Mod: One of the more interesting leftovers, it appears that this version of the M4A1 may have been used somewhere in the campaign, but never made the cut. It is missing it's original animations, and uses the ones from the regular M4A1 instead. It also has been modified to have a cloth around it's rail system.

Singeplayer Assets

Custom Assets

Hmmm...
To do:
Add unused weapons not mentioned here, reorganize this section better, and rip the remaining sounds/graphics.

Cut Levels/Maps

Hmmm...
To do:
Add some actual images from the console copy.
  • Ambush Large desert town. Excels in Sabotage matches.
  • Arcadia No description was given for the multiplayer map, one can assume this would have been a remake of the singleplayer map.
  • Argun No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on.
  • Armada No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains is the vision file related to the map, "armada.vision".
  • Backlot Medium sized construction site. Great level for any mode.
  • Bloc Large Russian apartment bloc. Intense Domination matches.
  • Bog Small desert bog. Open level, excellent for smaller groups.
  • Broadcast TV Station.
  • Cellblock No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. May have been an early version of the map "Gulag", which was also cut from the multiplayer release.
  • Countdown No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it.
  • Crib - Basement No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it. May have been an early version of the map "Estate", or just the basement portion of it.
  • Crossfire Small desert town. Intense interior fighting and strong firefights.
  • District Large urban town with a market in the middle. Great for team games.
  • Downpour Big rainy Russian farm. Excellent for Sabotage matches.
  • Dusk No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on.
  • Facility No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on.
  • Firing Range No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it. A map with the same name appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops I, using the same idea!'
  • Fuel No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. It later returned as a DLC map, using mp_fuel2, as mp_fuel and it's localization strings where already used for the cut map.
  • Gridiron Open launch pad. Huge sight lines and dangerous maneuvering.
  • Gulag Night time jail fight. Large scale Russian prison fighting.
  • Hill No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on.
  • International Space Station: A campaign level where the player would take control of an astronaut and would've explored certain elements of the story line deeper before dying. It was replaced by a brief cut scene in "Second Sun" where you also died.
  • Mall No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it.
  • Mansion No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. May have been an early version of the map "Estate".
  • Oil Rig No description was given for the multiplayer map, one can assume this would have been a remake of the singleplayer map.
  • Overgrown Scrapped from the original release, but re-introduced with DLC later in the game's lifetime. Interestingly enough, both MPUI_DESC_MAP_OVERGROWN and PATCH_MPUI_DESC_MAP_OVERGROWN exist, with the only difference being that the original version has a trailing dots on the end, where the final used version does not. ("Large overgrown rural Russian area. Sniper ghillie suits make for good cover..." compared to "Large overgrown rural Russian area. Sniper ghillie suits make for good cover.")
  • Palace No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on.
  • Pipeline Russian trainyard. Excellent team games.
  • Plaza A planned campaign mission and multiplayer map that was scrapped, along with any mentions of an Ultranationalist invasion on the West coast. The only remains are two vision files, "mp_downtown_la.vision" and "downtown_la.vision".
  • Raid Internally called "Skidrow". No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it.
  • Riverwalk No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it.
  • Shipment Tiny Russian shipyard. Fast paced action with no hiding.
  • Shipment(Splitscreen) Tiny Russian shipyard. Fast paced action with no hiding. Interestingly enough, this one may have been specifically for local 1v1 challenges.
  • Showdown Small desert arena. Great fast game play for small numbers of players.
  • Strike Large urban desert town. Excellent team games.
  • Tulsa: Another scrapped campaign mission. The only remnant of the level is a file in the game called "tulsa.vision".
  • Trailer No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it.
  • Verdict - Basement No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it.
  • Vertigo No description was ever created for this map, so one can assume it was cut fairly early on. All that remains are unused localization strings for it.
  • Wet Work Medium-large cargoship. Fast-paced Search and Destroy matches.

Unused Special Ops Mission

Interestingly enough, co_hunted, a map from the original Modern Warfare is still in the final release build. Besides it use for the Special Ops mission "Overwatch", it is possible to load the base map itself, where you play through a half finished mission which consists of you running from the helicopter crash site to the bridge. Upon reaching the bridge, your controls either freeze, or a grey window appears that asks you to "Return To Special Ops". If you do not reach the bridge in time, it blows up, and the mission fails. On easy, you would have 4 minutes to reach the bridge, regular you would have 3 minutes, hardened you would have 2 minutes, and on veteran, you would have a mere 1.5 minutes to reach the opposite side of the map. All allied forces use models from the original Modern Warfare game. On the other hand, the axis forces, as well as your own character, uses models from this instillation of the game. Below is a video which demonstrates the unused mission.

Leftover Video Files

On both the console and PC versions of the game, there are two leftover video files from the original Modern Warfare, named "title.bik", and "attract.bik".

Unused Gamemodes

  • Arena: Very similar to Search and Destroy. No respawning, first team to win four rounds wins. The object of the game mode is to kill all the opposing team's players. When only one player on each team is left standing, a flag spawns in a random location. If the flag is brought back to a team's respective side, they win. Even if one of the last two players alive kills the other, the flag must still be captured in order to win the round.
  • Arms Race: This is the only cut gamemode that is not playable at all. Only its sound files remain.
  • Defcon: A game mode with a twist. At Defcon 5, the game progresses as normal. At Defcon 4, each player goes into Last Stand before death. At Defcon 3, all weapons deal more damage. At Defcon 2, all killstreaks take one less kill to obtain. At Defcon 1, all players are eliminated from one round when killed. If after a minute one side has not won at Defcon 1, a Nuke detonates, and the games ends as a draw. Files called "[faction]_1mc_defcon_[1-5]_01.wav" can be found, and there are also the announcer sound files for the player's team saying Defcon 5 all the way to Defcon 1. Modders have re-enabled this game mode and it can be played on a private match.
  • Die Hard: Team Deathmatch, except every player is given Last Stand and teammates in Last Stand are marked with a green cross on the minimap. This game mode has a variant of almost every other game mode such as Die Hard Team Deathmatch, Die Hard Domination, and so on. A video of a match can be found here.
  • Global Thermonuclear War: Guard a tactical nuke from the enemy team until time ran out. Scrapped late in development, as it's fully functional and can be played using hacks, using a modding device, or joining a modded lobby. Plus, the Strategy guide shows pictures of a game of Global Thermonuclear War. A gameplay video showing this mode can be found here.
  • One Flag Capture the Flag: Capture the Flag, except one team has to defend a flag while the other team have to grab the flag and bring it back to their side. It works as intended and can also be played by joining a modded lobby. An example of a match can be found here.
  • VIP: Capture the Flag, but your team is instead protecting a randomly selected player. A group known as "AlterIWNet" restored this game mode and it can be seen here.

Unused Mail System

Interestingly enough, it appears that in it's early stages, MW2 used an in-game mailing system. All that remains of it is the following localized strings.

Code Name Description
MPUI_MAIL_CONTACT_DMITRI "Dmitri Volkov"
MPUI_MAIL_CONTACT_STRICKLAND "Col. Strickland"
MPUI_MAIL_SUBJECT_TOO "Target of oppurtunity eliminated!"
MPUI_MAIL_BODY_WEAPON_TOO "You've eliminated a known target that we'd been looking for for some time. We'll be sending you something useful as payment."

MPUI_MAIL_SUBJECT_SUPPORT_ARRIVED "Your authorization came through."
MPUI_MAIL_BODY_SUPPORT_ARRIVED "I got the authorization for some new air support. Get out there and win one for us!"

It appears that along with this mailing system, it would be possible to earn one of three lottery tickets, being either a regular ticket, a super ticket, or a mega ticket.

USMC

The USMC faction logo from the original Modern Warfare can be found in the files.

The unused USMC faction logo.

Unused EMP Announcement

The sound files for Multiplayer contain unused EMP Killstreak announcements that aren't announced via radio unlike the announcements used in the game.

Shepherd's Getaway

If you "noclip" fast enough when Shepherd is about to escape you can see that he is the one driving the Zodiac.

Region Differences

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Is there more?

There are some minor region centric changes to the game, mostly centered on the controversial "No Russian" mission. In the German and Japanese releases, the mission is failed and restarted from the last checkpoint if you kill a civilian, and the mission is removed entirely from the Russian release.
