After the Famicom Disk System, the Satellaview for the Super Famicom, and the 64DD for the Nintendo 64, Nintendo attempted to bring additional content for the Game Boy Advance with the e-Reader, long before the DLC trend took off by the seventh console generation.

Unlike the previous Japan-only attempts, this card-powered add-on was released in the US and Australia, although it was quickly discontinued. Europe, on the other hand, was screwed again. In Japan, however, it was supported until the end of the GBA's lifespan, and was also supported by some GameCube games.

A model of the Japan-only e+ version is present in Splatoon 2 as one of various objects floating in the sky of the Octo Expansion stages, with the "e+" label using the in-universe language's equivalents.
