This page sucks.
If you could make it suck less, that would be awesome.
Specifically: Needs audio clips and other data to substantiate some sections here. Also needs a rewrite.
This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

The Simpsons: Hit and Run is what people would call a "Grand Theft Auto clone". It contains a lot of unused content within it, too.

Console Leftovers in Windows

It turns out that if you look into the library of strings that this game has, you will see there there is a lot of leftovers.

Unused Graphics

PlayStation 2 Leftovers in Windows

Hmmm...
To do:
Get the GameCube and Xbox versions and see if the graphics are in there as well.

In the game's files, you can actually find images of the PlayStation 2 controller and some of its buttons.

Unused Levels

Hmmm...
To do:
List that data. Also, replace mission data from Levels 2, 3, 5, or 6 with this one to see at least what does.

Inside the PC version's "\scripts\missions" directory are two folders labeled level08 and level09, suggesting that the game had planned to have a total of nine levels instead of seven, but the eighth and ninth level didn't make the cut for unknown reasons. It might have been a placeholder.

The game makes another reference to the eighth cut level in "\art\missions", where a folder labeled level08 can be found. However, unlike the script folder, there are two files inside this folder, though these only seem to contain position data for an unfinished mission. Unlike level08, there is no art folder for level09.

Unused Areas

Hmmm...
To do:
Document two testing levels and add images.

Inside Burns' Mansion in Level 1

It is possible to get into the front garden and the interior of Mr. Burns' mansion in Level 1. The mansion has nearly the exact same appearance as it does in Level 4, except both the gags and furniture from Level 4 are missing.

Main Area Mr. Burns' Office
TheSimpsonsHit&Run-Level1-MansionMain.png TheSimpsonsHit&Run-Level1-MansionOffice.png

If you attempt to get out of the mansion through the front yard, you will end up respawning in the Nuclear Power Plant.

Unused Bonus Track

Homer on the bonus track.

Present in the game's files is an oval-shaped Springfield 500 track that takes place in a stadium. Being in a mostly complete state, it may have been an early concept or just cut because it was probably considered too short. The track itself resembles the racing track from the episode "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily". Although there are various ways to access it, the fastest and easiest way is to replace l1i00.p3d in the art folder with b00.p3d.

Drive to the school in Level 1, everything but some parts of the scenery and the bonus track in the distance will be invisible. Now you can drive to the bonus track. It is very easy to crash it this way, but again, this is the easiest way to access the track.

testlevelb02l

The first test level.

An unused monochrome test model for a bonus track map. It is most likely left in the game as a placeholder for a test map. It does not appear to be based on any of the seven present bonus tracks, as it features several holes, ramps, and bumps that would make it appropriate for an off-road track.

testlevelb02st

The second test level.

A similarly titled test model to testlevelb02l, albeit with a more flat terrain and having red textured walls, presumably a placeholder for actual racing walls. Much like testlevelb02l, it is not based on any present bonus track, and is most likely a placeholder.

Past the Bridge in Level 7

The 939 Area, Accessed using cheats

In Level 7, the 939 area of Evergreen Terrace is fenced off from both sides of the map (from the Power Plant, a door barricade is in place, and from the school, the bridge is broken and covered by spotlights), but with the honk to jump code and invincibility code, the player can get past the school bridge barrier and go to the bridge. Any car can work, but the RC Car is recommended. The bridge has weird collision, like the walls not being solid nor the building. After one manages to get past the bridge, one can go to the other side, however, the area is incomplete and isn't solid.

The houses look a bit different, as they are missing their walls and gates, and there are two floating "Springfield Gasoline" signs where the gas station is supposed to be, the area looks somewhat different from Levels 1 and 4, and there's a house that took place of the ramp. However, if you manage to get to the roof of the non-solid house that replaced the ramp like going beyond and respawning and going back, the jump camera enables. This shows that this area could be accessed legitimately at one point. A former Radical Entertainment designer confirmed that the area was cut to make workload more manageable for artists working on the level.

Interestingly, there are spawn points from the other side of the blockades along with solid ground which can be driven on, making it easier for the player to get to the other side of the bridge.

Inside the Nuclear Plant in Level 7

Behind the door. There really isn't much to see here.

Just like the bridge, the Nuclear Plant in Level 7 is blocked off, but is possible to get past with the same cheats. This time, any car can work always. However, after that, the area is just nothing. The mini-map continues like it did in Level 1 and 4, but after where the hall is supposed to open up, the mini-map shows the end, but the sound that is heard in the plant in Levels 1 and 4 plays. However, the fun doesn't stop there! If one goes further, the sound that plays in the room where nuclear waste from the pipes and into the nuclear lake plays, and if one goes even further, they will eventually hear the unused Level 7 version of the Stonecutters' Tunnel theme.

Unused Vehicles

Although technically not unused, as mods can bring them back up or an in-game cheat for the phone booth makes a subsection for these cars, and the fact that they are used by NPC racers in the bonus racing mini games, the following cars are never seen on the roads and cannot be purchased. Oddly, for unused cars, they can be driven by the player and have proper statistics like normal cars, hinting they were originally going to be used at one point in the game.

Internal Name Image Description
tt ( cuda in tt.con ) The Copyright Police is not happy. At all. A first-generation Audi TT. The game will crash if you try to enter it, so you'll need to destroy the car and then drive the wreck over a wrench pickup to properly drive it. It's likely here for testing.
CellB Would have given us extra variety. A beige colored Cellphone Car. These different colored variants were meant for the Cell-Outs mission in Level 2, but the first one (CellA) is used four times. They also have different ringing and horn noises.
CellC SHAR-CellC.png Lavender Cellphone car.
CellD SHAR-CellD.png Lighter blue Cellphone car.
CCube SHAR-CubeVan.png A slightly vandalized cyan and grey van with boxes in the rear cargo. Quite possibly a placeholder car, as two trucks featured in-game (The cBone and Duff Truck) are simply re-textured versions of the car. Oddly enough, though, it is slightly taller than the other two trucks, and the yellow headlights are slightly different.
Icecream SHAR-ICTruck.png An ice cream truck for Phineas Q. Butterfat's parlor. The top of the truck has Marge's head and hair depicted as tall ice cream, and has a jingle of its own. It's not mentioned in the traffic data for any level, but it's speculated it might have been used for Level 1.
SedanA SHAR-SedanA.png A sedan which it would've appeared in place of the School Bus in Level 1's traffic (as evidenced by its internal name right next to the string for the school bus). Judging by the name of the car, it's most likely a smaller variant of SedanB. The grey is also used in other traffic cars for coloring.
WagonA SHAR-StationWagon.png A station wagon variant of SedanA with a longer chassis and re-textured grille sticker, but sharing the grille and stock wheels. While not documented anywhere, early trailers and previews show that the car was originally intended to appear in place of the Glass Truck in Level 1. Despite it's name, it is the only station wagon in the entire game.

Additionally, there is a Test.con, a testing handling file for a "ferra".

Unused Models

Unused Character Models

Hmmm...
To do:
list the dialogue for Agnes in the Unused Voice Clips section
Internal Name Image Description
franke_m Simpsons HnR - Frankenstein Boy.png Unused model for a male child pedestrian intended to spawn in Level 7. He shares his quotes with male children found in Level 1 to Level 6.
askinn_m SHAR skinner.png Unused 3D model of Agnes Skinner. Most likely meant as a passenger in Skinner's Sedan, but goes unused due to limitations, instead replacing her with a low-poly model of her in the style of drivers in NPC-driven cars. Agnes has unique quotes for being hit, avoiding a car, and being kicked.

Using a code, the player can cycle through every character model to allow them to play as any character in any level.

Platform Code
Windows In the Options menu, hold F1 and press Down Arrow, Down Arrow, Down Arrow, Left Arrow.
GameCube (US) Use the following Gecko code and then press B during gameplay:

Homer's Road Rage model was originally going to be reused in Hit & Run. This model is found in the Main Menu models.

Podium

SHAR podium.png

A podium, found in the multiplayer game.

Pedestal

SHAR pedestal.png

An early version of the Pedestal.

Unused Gags

Hmmm...
To do:
Add video(s) for the gags, add pictures, and list more if in the game.

In the files, by using text editing programs, the player can find three unused gags all meant for Evergreen Terrace (Levels 1, 4 and 7) and one for the Springfield Squidport (levels 3 and 6). These gags do not have a set place for where they appear, making them unused. Setting a place for them in the game will allow them to spawn.

  • There was originally supposed to be a red and blue merry-go-round that was likely meant for Springfield Elementary School judging by the HUD, but got cut for unknown reasons. When the player clicks on the gag, it would spin around.
  • Near the Tomacco field, there was supposed to be a flock of crows that flew away if the player clicked on them. According to the animation, it seems to have looked glitchy and incomplete which is possibly why it got cut.
  • In the Android's Dungeon, there was supposed to be a doll that blew up. It would produce an inflating and deflating sound when activated.
  • There was supposed to be a bat gag for Level 7 which would've functioned like Level 1 and 4's crow gag.

Misplaced Objects

By using cheats or mods to go out-of-bounds in the level maps, the player can see some unused objects that are either erroneously misplaced or some leftovers that seemed to be from earlier in development.

The paintings

In Level 1, there are two portraits that appear to be Simpson-styled versions of the painting "American Gothic". These were most likely intended for an earlier revision of the Stonecutter's Tunnel.

The washing machine.

In Level 1, Level 4, and Level 7, there is a washing machine found. This is most likely a mis-spawn, as the washing machines are actually meant to appear outside Muntz's House. Strangely, there is a cow's head placed next to the washing machine in Level 1.

E3 Levels and Missions

Hmmm...
To do:
Get more information. There HAS to be more that wasn't documented here.

The game has two unused level scripts that are intended for an E3 demo.

Level 2

In the game's files, there is a version of the 2nd level that differs quite a bit from the final version of it.

Level Comparison

The following are differences between the E3 Version and the Final Version.

  • In the E3 version of the level, the player starts off with the "Bandit" car, which is one of the fastest vehicles in the final game. In the final version of the level, the player starts off with the Honor Roller.
  • All the gags in the E3 version of the level differ slightly.
    • They don't give coins when you use them.
    • They can't be repeated.
    • Some of them aren't present in the files.
    • Some of them are positioned differently.
  • In the E3 version of the level, when the player gets zapped by a wasp camera, it uses Homer's electrocuted model.
  • The level doesn't seem to work with missions properly. If you try to talk to Cletus to start the E3 Better than Beef mission, the game softlocks.

Better Than Beef

The mission itself is close to that of the final. It can be played by replacing the file m5i.mfk with the file e3m1i.mfk and then using a text editing program to edit the first line of the now replaced file.

Before After
SelectMission("e3m1"); SelectMission("m5");

The following are differences between the E3 Version and the Final Version.

  • You are given more time in the E3 version of the mission.
  • Apu uses an AI (Easycop.con) that differs from the Final version.
  • "Curious Curator" doesn't play when Apu appears in the E3 version.
  • At the end of the mission, you have to manually talk to Cletus, instead of having it happen automatically in the Final version.

Level 7

Rigor Motors

Unfortunately, the script for this mission is incomplete, and the only objective in the file is only a "dummy" objective that's obviously meant for testing.

The following is the mission's script contents:

SelectMission("e3m1");

//SetMissionResetPlayerInCar("level7_carstart");
//SetDynaLoadData("l7z1.p3d;l7r1.p3d;l7r7.p3d;");
SetMissionResetPlayerOutCar("level7_homer_start", "level7_carstart");
SetDynaLoadData("l7z1.p3d;l7r1.p3d;l7r7.p3d;l7i02.p3d@", "SimpsonsHouse");

AddStage(0);
	AddObjective("dummy");
	CloseObjective();
CloseStage();

CloseMission();

Collision Debug

SHAR-GridViewCheat.png

By using a cheat code in the in-game options menu, one can toggle a debugging tool for collision. The area where the player's character or car is marked red, while the areas that aren't are white. It continuously changes as you drive along, the areas shown being the closest to you.

The following table is a list of button combinations for each platform.

System Button Combination
GameCube and Xbox Hold L and R while pressing the following buttons in order: B, A, B, Y.
PlayStation 2 Hold L1 and R1 while pressing the following buttons in order: TSHnR-PS2LeftoversPC-CircleButton.png, TSHnR-PS2LeftoversPC-XButton.png, TSHnR-PS2LeftoversPC-CircleButton.png, TSHnR-PS2LeftoversPC-TriangleButtonSmall.png.
Windows Hold F1 while pressing the following keys in order: Down, Up, Down, Right.

This function does cause a slowdown in performance.

Unused Music

Hmmm...
To do:
Add some more unused cues.

fe_trans

Lowest Normal Highest

Those three trumpet tracks get slightly higher in key go unused. The only logical place where they could've been used are after completing the Street Races, since there are exactly three races, but there is normally silence at the end of each Street Race when the character celebrates.

tuba_024

A cue meant for level 1, but unused since it is placed in the wrong folder within the files.

land_of_choc_end_neg

This song plays when the player fails the second part of There's Something About Monty..., except you can't hear it normally because it's impossible to fail the second part of the mission. The previous mission stages are fallible and reuse halls_balls from Milking the Pigs, but not when you have to get to Mr. Burns' office. The reason why the second part isn't failable is because there isn't any condition that you can violate to fail the mission itself and trigger this.

However, if the mission file (m4i.mfk) is viewed with a program such as Notepad++, you can see an unused time limit that the developers commented out by adding "//" to the beginning of the line. If you delete these slashes and then save the file, you can re-enable the timer for this part of the mission. If you let the timer run out, this plays.

The timer was likely dropped because the developers may have thought it was too difficult as it is hard to climb Burns' Office within a short time limit, considering making a mistake usually results in the player having to start over from the beginning of the mission. However, since none of the game's other missions use this song where you can fail, this jingle goes fully unused. The song is later used again in the credits, but only the main part.

organ_music

A strange unused song that can be heard in Level 7 if the player uses cheats to get outside the map near the Power Plant. The song is a slowed down version of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue". The song's quality is radio-ish, much like the muzak used in Stone Cutter Hall in Levels 1 and 4. It seems likely that Stone Cutter Hall was meant to be explored at one point in Level 7 along with the rich side, but it was cut off entirely.

scarymusic01

A slowed down, mechanical sounding version of Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag. The song was intended to play in the rooftop garden of the Kwik-E-Mart during Level 7, replacing the song heard in Level 1 and 4. However, in the final game, no music plays on the rooftop garden.

Stone_Cutter_Spoof

Found in Level 7 if the player uses cheats to get outside the map near the blocked-off bridge. Given the name, it's possible this was meant for Stone Cutter Hall, since the file name for the track that plays at the Duff Brewery has a similar title (duffbeer_spoof) and that the song resembles the actual Stonecutters' theme song in Homer the Great. Alternatively, it may have been played inside Mr. Burns' mansion, assuming it would have appeared alongside the tunnel.

powerplant_10sec

Judging by the name, This song was meant to be played when the timer is under 10 seconds in the mission "Blind Big Brother" (The music for the mission being titled "powerplant_main") but for unknown reasons it does not play. It joins together seamlessly with the mission failed theme further proving that it must have meant to be played here.

Revisional Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Confirm if the Player's Choice GameCube release fixed some of the issues. Also, upload some of the pictures.

Hit & Run was released on all major platforms at the time, and a couple of minor changes were made to each release.

  • The PlayStation 2 port, runs at a lower framerate due to weaker hardware (almost less than 30) and this does screw up the physics slightly.
  • The GameCube and PlayStation 2 ports share a bug where you can repeat the bonus mission for Level 7. While the red exclamation mark will not appear over Smithers' head, the blue glow underneath his feet will.
  • The Xbox port has a built-in "widescreen" option that every other version lacked.

Console Differences

Audio

Hmmm...
To do:
Get the rest of the audio files and compare them.

Between each console there are certain sound files for the tutorial that actually differ between each console.

Car Entrance Tutorial

The Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions of this sound more enthusiastic than the GameCube version. The pacing is noticeably different too.

Soundfile System Transcription
Xbox Press the Y button to get in the car and don't take all day, this is just the tutorial.
PlayStation 2 Press the △ to get in the car and don't take all day, this is the tutorial.
GameCube Press the Y button to get in the car, and don't take all day this is the tutorial.
Interior Entrance Tutorial

There is a bit of a dialog changes between the PS2 version and the other consoles.

Soundfile System Transcription
Xbox and GameCube You can go inside certain buildings by pressing the Y button. *sigh*, why did I agree to do this stupid tutorial it is so boring!
PlayStation 2 You can go inside certain builds by pressing the △ button- Ugh, why did I agree to do this stupid tutorial it is so boring!

GameCube Port

The GameCube release seems to be based on an earlier build of the game, as it has some oddities within it.

The Hovercar's Transparency

The Hovercar's transparency effect doesn't appear to work properly. The windows on the car are not transparent, which leads to an issue where the characters cannot be seen once the car reaches full speed. The refraction effect also appears to be broken as well.

GameCube PlayStation 2, Xbox and Windows

In the other ports, this issue was fixed.

Music

Evergreen Terror's theme has a hard-to-hear guitar midway that was amplified in other releases:

GameCube PlayStation 2, Xbox and Windows

Windows Port

The PC port adds a "Lemonade Stand" prop in Level 1 and re-did both the entire HUD and some textures to support higher resolutions.

PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube Windows
SHAR No Lemonade.png Lemonade, anyone?

In addition to this, there are even some textures for when the vehicle selected (in the phone booth menu) is damaged.

Windows PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube
Just a flesh wound. TSHnR-ForComparison-PhoneBoothNondamagedCarPS2.png

However, the PC release is missing several visual enhancements, such as the "lens flare" effect from the sun seen in Level 1, the original shader that the Hovercar used in the console releases is missing entirely (so the effect isn't as translucent as the console releases), and the "steering" animations for the player go unused due to what appears to be a technical oversight.

The icon for Snake behind bars from the mission "Clueless" was changed.
