Prototypes

Big question: How do people find prototypes of video games? Because there is believed to be a Streets of Rage 1 prototype in a private collection or something. Where do people look to find them? --Sultanofswag89 (talk) 19:39, 9 August 2017 (EDT)

Several places. One of them is auction sites like eBay and Yahoo Auctions (the Japanese version), though those aren't the best. You can also find these in thrift stores and trade shops, but only if you're very lucky. Finding binaries either though archive.org, Usenet archives, and FTP sites is also a thing. Grey/Black Markets are a way, but they are shady, of course. There are some markets online too, like Assembler, though these are of highly varying quality and reputability. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 02:16, 10 August 2017 (EDT)

New version of image

So I made a new gif removing the watermark and uploaded it, but it put the same one online (the one with the watermark). The one I got on my computer is not the same one that got uploaded. I don't get it! --Ltr121312 (talk) 21:30, 23 August 2017 (EDT)

Persona 3 Bullshit

Busy working on a mod and since you changed up one of my entries, I thought this might interest you.

Act quickly because I'm going have to get rid of it soon for space on my Google Drive https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0DpwE9gZPKPX19ndUUzSWpfaE0 -BlowingYourMind

GIF compression

I'm currently working on an article, and have a few unused (two-dimensional) animations which I was going to include, which are stored as individual frames in the game files. However, making a GIF 'mockup' of the complete animation and saving it results in the image colours being indexed, and the overall number of colours in the animation reduced, resulting in decreased quality. Should I still create these GIFs anyway and use them, or should I just mention the existence of the animations on the page?

I should probably also mention that the animations (which I've looked at so far) are only around 5-8 frames each, but are 1064x1080. (There are, I believe, a few others that are around 10 frames each and are 212x212.) --periaster (talk · contribs) 20:11, 23 September 2017 (EDT)

Minor correction: The 212x212 animations are not unused. --periaster (talk · contribs) 20:20, 23 September 2017 (EDT)
I'm not sure how good those animations look. If they don't look good, then I'd just mention them. You can also save the animations as APNGs (though some editors like GIMP need a plug-in), which work in most browsers (though not IE and Edge). --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:21, 23 September 2017 (EDT)
Thanks! I wasn't aware of APNGs, I'll try saving them as APNGs and comparing the filesize difference to see if it's worth it. --periaster (talk · contribs) 21:31, 23 September 2017 (EDT)

Combining segmented images

Related (though not strongly) to my previous question; there are also some large (1080p, though slightly wider than 1980px) images which are stored in the game files as smaller segments of the full image. With most of them, there are only two/three segments, so uploading all of the segments and just placing them beside each other in the article seems to be the way to go. However, there are two images in particular that have 60 segments each, and one with 37 segments. Would you recommend uploading all segments of these images individually as with the other images, or would you recommend joining the images (losslessly) before uploading them? The only real difference is the quantity of files which are uploaded (joining them may also result in a slightly smaller overall file size, though likely not by much). --periaster (talk · contribs) 20:55, 23 September 2017 (EDT)

I recommending joining them losslessly. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:21, 23 September 2017 (EDT)

Rules on uploading game builds

I posted this in the Talk:Darblez page but figured I would ask for clarification since that page isn't visited frequently. I have a development build of the game with the same date as the final released build; the final build has been taken down and is no longer available on the stores it was released on. Can or should this be uploaded to the main page, or are there other rules regarding uploading these types of files? Thank you! --Kimimaru (talk) 20:42, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

Depends on how much it's different. I know nothing about the version changes and if it's the same as the final version minus debug features being enabled (that can't be enabled in a retail version), it may as well be a prototype. If it can be re-enabled in the retail version, place it on the main page. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:28, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

Action 52, two versions of French Baker?!

I'm not sure if this has to be asked on the discussion page of Action 52, or if I can just ask here, but in Action 52's ROM, "French Baker" appears twice. One in the same bank as They Came and Shooting Gallery, and one in the same bank as Fuzz Power. The latter has a "The" at the beginning of its name. This guy: https://youtu.be/qMSX5nUev-g somehow hacked the game to play the other version. I'm not sure if you would know exactly how he did it, but do you know what process he followed? --Sultanofswag89 18:39, 13 October 2017 (EDT)

Probably used a Game Genie code in the emulator to switch banks and go to a different program execution address. Alternately, he could have disassembled the ROM and changed the menu pointer to go the alternate version. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:33, 13 October 2017 (EDT)

Zelda

You are brutal, I worked really hard on that!--Robossnik (talk) 17:53, 16 October 2017 (EDT)

Effort appreciated, but I don't see much of a point of having a gif alternate between differences in general. It did help confirm the palette was brighter at least. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 22:39, 16 October 2017 (EDT)

Scans?

So in me Watchlist or whatever the English name for that is, I noticed a change in a page (TND Prerelease), with an added scan. Now, I tried to see some stuff from help section, seeing as there's thing with scans to note. Here's the thing, that scan in question happens to be my work for me own thingy, and it's not in its finest quality (compressed .jpg I show in the mentioned source instead of the original .png which would also be available there). And the thing in it isn't in the final game. I don't mind me work being shown, that's what it's for, but I was wondering if any action should be taken. I found the rules a bit... Confusing here. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 12:18, 7 November 2017 (EST)

Yep, watchlist. Upload the original .png in place of the .jpeg. For prerelease pages, if a JPEG is the only source found, use it. If a better quality image is available, upload it. If that image wasn't a JPEG, upload it as a PNG. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 20:38, 7 November 2017 (EST)
Seems I'm a good guesser. About the image thingy, all I could do was upload it as a new .png, not as a new revision (.jpg.jpeg mismatched with MIME/png). Couldn't get rid of this .jpg in the process. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 05:22, 8 November 2017 (EST)

Incredibles files

Hey,

what programs did you use to extract/get into the files for Incredibles? thanks The preceding unsigned comment was added by DuckPyro (talk • contribs)

I am not the person to ask, as I mostly did clean-up work for that article. Best guess is QuickBMS or Watto's Game Extractor. MegaSpeed, ‎SuperSqank or Theincrediblesderp (or mrsmonicfanboy) would be your best hope. Also, don't forget to add your signature. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 13:08, 11 November 2017 (EST)

Wii Sports "Fake" Protoype?

Hi there, sorry to bother you about it, but I'm just confused by that Wii Sports prototype stuff that someone put up, is it real or is it fake?

Wasn't sure to believe it or not...

Many Thanks! --Blayer98 (talk) 20:49, 12 November 2017 (EST)

To be honest, I have no idea either. The article proudly proclaimed it was found by a user, yet there was no evidence of it ever being dumped (and I searched like a madman). Also, the article had poor formatting choices, bad grammar, and unverifiable statements all around. They said it had debugdata.brres as one of the files allegedly not in the final game, if that helps any. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 20:54, 12 November 2017 (EST)

Image labeling

Dude could you stop labeling my rips for the wrong platform first was labeling the albw textures I've ripped as Wii u textures to labeling the cooking mama 4 leftovers I've ripped as DS rips --Betadude meh (talk) 15:31, 23 November 2017 (EST)

Label the rips yourself then. All files have to be labelled here anyway. I'm doing the best guessing where those graphics were ripped from, but I'll admit I'm not always right and I make a mistake here and there. You can also fix the labelling yourself too with the edit tab rather than complaining to me about it. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 12:59, 23 November 2017 (EST)
Im not forcing you to label it correctly im just furious from the mistakes btw i fixed the first two rips along time ago --Betadude meh (talk) 15:31, 23 November 2017 (EST)
No need to get furious about relatively minor mistakes. It's like getting angry over spilled milk. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 13:12, 23 November 2017 (EST)

I am sorry but I Can not get dolphin emulator because i do not have a good computer and it does not meet the system requirements to install dolphin. Why did you have to take my picture down though?--Glator99 (talk) 00:15, 24 November 2017 (EST)

It was not a good picture to begin with, as it was a capture of a TV screen (which is normally discouraged). While it did demonstrate that the hack works, it was a JPEG too (again, discourage) and I hope to get a clean emulator screenshot in PNG format to replace it. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 00:20, 24 November 2017 (EST)
ok so one of my friends got it working but it ended up like this Will this image still work though? --Glator99 (talk) 00:49, 24 November 2017 (EST)
It's an improvement at least. Still needs work, but it's much more acceptable now. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 00:53, 24 November 2017 (EST)

French translating (help pages)

Hello, Can I translate the help pages in french? --Mario1981 (talk) 14:15, 27 November 2017 (EST)

If you know French well enough and don't need too much reliance on Google Translate, then yes. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 20:31, 27 November 2017 (EST)

Hi, I want to translate the contents into Korean.

Hi, I have a question about translation.

I saw what you commented on.

Then, if there is something I want to translate ...

If I choose to edit the body of the menu and write it at the top, say {{needranslation | lang = en |}}?

I'm not accustomed to translation rules yet, so I'm sorry for the trouble. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jaymz9634 (talk • contribs)

For each page you want translated, edit the page with
!languages /? !translate?
at the top of the page, then
!/translate?
at the bottom of it (replace the question marks with > and the exclamation marks with <). I then mark each page manually for translation, which will then allow you to edit each page bit by bit.--From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 20:49, 4 December 2017 (EST)

Adding Videos Question

I found videos of every Pokemon's walking and running animations in Pokemon Sun and Moon uploaded by KazoWAR. But, the person who uploaded them has them all separated into 14 videos total. So I'm worried it may clog up the page too much. I put them all in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAYDljMrJXPqmqkt5uoFbAR9AUHGqw68j --WhiteCheddaPichu (talk) 18:49, 3 January 2018 (EST)

Oh dear. Apparently, all of them are unused. I'm not sure how to handle this myself, considering there's over 1600 animations. But yeah, do a direct link to the playlist at the very least. I'd say do one giant video edit or two separate edits for the running and walking anims, but YT's size limitations may prevent that. I'm not sure what to make of those animations myself, other than that they might be used during cutscenes while they were out of the ball (That's too speculatory though). --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 20:30, 3 January 2018 (EST)
Well from what I've seen some of them might be used in the Pokefinder feature, but very few of them. --WhiteCheddaPichu (talk) 16:39, 4 January 2018 (EST)

T&E SOFT Golf series

It's unfortunate you've removed them because the header is the only place the official order of the games is noted, with the games being listed as Vol. 1/2/3/4. Even the release order does not reflect the actual order or dates of development. Leaving the volume labels in the template makes no sense without the related headers. Matt (talk) 05:56, 5 January 2018 (EST)

Hello again! I saw your recent edit about New 3D Golf Simulation: Waialae no Kiseki and wondered at what address is the old code is that circles the green? I'll look to see if I can enable it. Also, what MD/Genesis debugging tools do you recommend? I'm also interested in translating these games so am putting adding to my tool set. Matt (talk) 06:30, 3 April 2018 (EDT)
Can't remember. To debug, Gens (and its many variants) has a bunch of debugging tools to view what's been loaded in and out of RAM. Instructions for these can be found here. Bizhawk can also do similar debugging, as can Exodus. Both require large amounts of RAM though, especially if you are trying to view memory, a disassembly, and tile viewing at the same time. There are also plenty of disassemblers out in the wild for the 68000 (and Zilog 80).--From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:32, 3 April 2018 (EDT)
Sadly that is not very helpful. Thanks anyway. Matt (talk) 07:31, 10 April 2018 (EDT)

Why remove my entry on the Content to expand page?

I wasn't asking for people on TCRF to cover the fact that Opus N' Bill: Brain Saver was found on LMW (or why the screensaver was revised). I was just asking for someone to cover graphical changes made for Death Toasters. (Not to be harassing the site with info on something that isn't a game.) I think I remember seeing people on here cover things that aren't games in their own right before, so why is this an exception? --See you on Scratch or something! -PacManfan64 (talk) 21:11, 26 January 2018 (EST)

Because those things are usually parts of games consoles or arcade machines. TCRF is still primarily focused on games first and foremost. Opus N' Bill: Brain Saver, on the other hand, is a screensaver for Windows and Mac computers. I do have my own wiki for stuff like this, if you're interested, and I made a quick article on it there. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:14, 26 January 2018 (EST)
Can you give me a link to the article, then? --See you on Scratch or something! -PacManfan64 (talk) 22:36, 7 February 2018 (EST)

Is this an unused sprite?

I was ripping some sprites from Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure, and I found this:

Is this unused for some sort of bad ending? I don't think I seen it before.

It's used when Elmyra catches Buster in Montana Max's Factory. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 22:27, 2 February 2018 (EST)

GeraheadsCollisionBoxSize.png

Thanks for renaming this file! I only noticed the typo after uploading it, and was searching the help for info on how to get it renamed, but no no avail :(. Can these be tagged or something? Cheers. AdamP (talk) 22:41, 12 February 2018 (EST)

We use {{renamefile}} in files that need to be renamed. It should be noted that we point out how players can access the debugging stuff like what's been uncovered in Gearheads. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 23:13, 12 February 2018 (EST)
Thanks. I've added instructions to the article (if there's a hidden code or parameter that accesses it, I don't know about it. But what I do know is that there is only one reference to FullMenu in the .exe file and there are two for SignMenu and that changing one of the SignMenu references to FullMenu makes the game load that menu instead. There are also a couple of other menus, but they don't have anything that isn't in SignMenu of FullMenu). I found all this a few months ago, and did some YouTube videos on it. I thought it would be perfect for TCRF (I hope I'm right :)) and I noticed that there wasn't even a page for the Windows version! (we did already have a page about the Mac version, but I have no idea if any of what I've found applies to that version). There are also some unused dialogues, but they're similar to the Toybox contents and App Setup dialogues. Should I include them in the article too? Also, I don't actually know what some of the stuff does! (such as Drag Obstacles, Mouse on Left, Mouse on Right, the "Erratic Path" option hidden beneath the App Setup dialogue, and all the AI stuff). Would {{todo}} be an appropriate tag for the stuff whose function has yet to be discovered? Should I also provide a screenshot of a hacked App Setup dialogue that shows these settings? Another thing that might be worth mentioning is that the manual has screenshots of a build that uses the "Full Menu", and Zimmerman's book Rules of Play does say that a prototype version had menus that enabled the tweaking of toy settings. I can only assume that is what I've uncovered. Thanks again. AdamP (talk) 00:13, 13 February 2018 (EST)
For now, I've made a disambig page. Yes, the {{todo}} is appropriate for functions whose purpose is unknown. Yes, the hidden menus are very much relevant to TCRF. Thank you for putting that on the wiki. You mention how the manual shows a screenshot of this and how Zimmerman mentioned that in a book (though do mention the book's name too). The unused dialogues are also relevant and should be added. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:03, 13 February 2018 (EST)
Cheers. Is it worth uploading images of the unused Joystick screens, given their similarity to the used ones? Also, the demo version would appear to be an earlier revision, given the differences between it and the full version (not to mention the earlier copyright date). Should a subpage be made, or should it be covered on the main page? (I daresay we could do with a screenshot of a greyed game screen) Another thing: I checked the resources of the other language executable files, and these secret menus and screens are in English on all of them (it's only the ordinarily-accessible stuff that's been translated). Should this be mentioned? (it could be indicative of something) Thanks. AdamP (talk) 23:45, 13 February 2018 (EST)
The demo version would be documented here. The unused and used joysticks screens should be uploaded and compared. Mention that the secret menus and screens are only in English, regardless of what language is selected. Speculation not recommended here. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 23:52, 13 February 2018 (EST)
Thanks. I'll do it tomorrow (it's gone 5am where I am). Is the demo version really a prototype though? As I understand it, it was officially released in magazines, and I definitely remember playing it as a kid. AdamP (talk) 00:11, 14 February 2018 (EST)
It was made before the final game, so it counts. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 01:11, 14 February 2018 (EST)
Thanks again. I think the Gearheads page is now mostly complete (but might need some copy editing and whatnot). Should I perhaps add screenshots of the other two hidden menus? Also, while looking at gearage.dll in Borland Resource Workshop, I came across an image of a copyright notice that I can;t seem to find in the game (I believe it is used in the demo however). Would this count as an unused graphic? AdamP (talk) 23:34, 14 February 2018 (EST)
The other two hidden menus should be added. The copyright notice counts as an unused graphic. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 23:35, 14 February 2018 (EST)

Solitaire (Windows, 1990)

Hi again,

About my discovery: do you think a screenshot of an altered currency format in the game is warranted? It appears to be independent of the system's currency format. I tried it in Windows 98 and it's the same (I'll need to check the XP version: if the setting exists, it'll probably be in the registry somewhere). Thanks. AdamP (talk) 00:34, 19 February 2018 (EST)

You could do it, but it's very minor to have a screenshot of the currency format. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 00:53, 19 February 2018 (EST)

Hi,

Did you see my 8 and F8 HORZA codes? Do you think they come under the "Other cheat codes which are newly discovered and not published anywhere else." exception? I've had a look and I can't find these codes anywhere else. Even Bullfrog didn't document them. Thanks. AdamP (talk) 23:43, 5 March 2018 (EST)

I think so. But there could be plenty more HORZA activates, yet isn't documented including a way to activate the debug menu. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 23:52, 5 March 2018 (EST)
This describes a way to activate the cheat menu. I tried it, but it didn't work :( (I assume "WIN" is the Windows key? That's rather curious for a DOS game... Is there a Windows version?). I don't know if it's HORZA or not. I'll need to double-check the debug menu in the file: it is rather difficult to read. But there is definitely some sort of debug menu there. AdamP (talk) 00:21, 6 March 2018 (EST)

Possibly unused?

I found these with BizHawk upon loading the first level's graphics (in the PCE version of Youkai Douchuuki). The only time I remember Tarosuke crying in this game are the Hell and Hungry Ghoul endings (Hell's ending has him crying in his squashed frames), so what are these for?

I found a prototype rom of this version of Glover, but I get the feeling it is the original, just modified. I don’t know if it is actually a prototype rom or not. How do I know if this is real or not? Here is the download link: http://www.completeroms.com/dl/nintendo-64/glover-usa-beta/108587 --Sultanofswag89 (talk) 22:23, 19 March 2018 (EST)

I checked this ROM and it is documented in various ROM databases, including libretro-database:
game (
	name "Glover (USA) (Beta)"
	description "Glover (USA) (Beta)"
	rom ( name "Glover (USA) (Beta).n64" size 67108864 crc 4C708E6D md5 E0BF0F117BA6A2379F9583370F18CD5E sha1 72484ED65CC8CEFE23E6536735D053B822BB7FBF )
)
That having been said, this doesn't really verify its authenticity. It just indicates that the ROM is known. ---GerbilSoft (talk) 22:51, 19 March 2018 (EDT)

I just wanted to know if there was a way to know, because I was planning on starting a prototype article on the Glover N64 page, and I didn't want to start one without knowing for sure if the ROM was really a prototype or just a modified original. Is it ok if I start working on one? --Sultanofswag89 (talk) 13:50, 29 March 2018 (EST)

It's a prototype. The differences are bit too extensive to be considered a fake. One easy way to check is with HXD's file compare function. It's not sophisticated, but it does allow comparisons pretty quickly. Interestingly, the prototype header is "whack 'n' roll", while the final is "Glover". Also, the prototype has two dates in it "V7 11MAY98..V16 16JUL98" (@2F30) the final version has "V25 08AUG98" (@3F98). The prototype also lacks any text for the non-English languages. The pointers are also too extensively different for it to be a modification. The cheats menu appears to be absent too, as no reference to it can be found in the prototype.--From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 22:39, 29 March 2018 (EDT)

WindowsZone?

Since TCRF now allows fan games, would something like WindowsZone be considered article worthy? I ask because I found some stuff in sonic.ini involving unused (and nonfunctional) things involving flying and gliding, but I doubt it would be acceptable because it's not much of a "game". --See you on Scratch or something! -PacManfan64 (talk) 17:51, 2 April 2018 (EDT)

To be honest, I'm not sure. It probably would be better on my wiki than here, as it's more of an interactive toy than a game. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:29, 2 April 2018 (EDT)
That's not much of unused content either, the values are read from the ini file into variables of the Player class, but it never checks them, I never even attempted to implement those features. MainMemory (talk) 01:05, 3 April 2018 (EDT)

Pardon me diving, but if it isn't too much trouble could you please translate this interview? It's two whole pages so it might take a while though it would be appreciated. It would also be appreciated if you put the translation on the pre-release discussion page, that way it is accessible to everyone without harming the main article. Thank you.--Super-Xnot (talk) 20:47, 4 April 2018 (EDT)

I can translate portions of it, but I can't guarantee I'll translate the whole thing. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:30, 4 April 2018 (EDT)

Licensed Music Upload Guidelines

To be honest, I think you should change up the guidelines for uploading licensed music. You know, real-life songs. Unless the song itself is a rare cover of some sort, (the unused songs from Dance Dance Revolution for example) I don't think uploaded licensed music should be allowed on the wiki and rather should be linked from YouTube, like in the beta page of The Simpsons: Road Rage.

Just an idea. SodaDog (talk) 13:22, 17 April 2018 (EDT)

I don't think there are any rules on licensed music at the moment. I do understand the many potential copyright issues though. If you find any pages where licensed music was uploaded (and isn't different enough from the original track), please notify us. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:40, 17 April 2018 (EDT)

Quantum Gate

All known Mac copies were self-published by HyperBole and "distributed exclusively by WEA". Do you know for sure that a Mac version was published by Media Vision?

Here's the timeline I've been able to piece together:

1993 — Media Vision publishes the PC version.

May 1994 — Amazon mysteriously lists a Quantum Gate "audio CD" as being published by Media Vision.

17 May 1994 — "CEO Paul Jain was forced to step down as Media Vision quickly became the subject of the longest-running securities fraud case in Silicon Valley history."

13 June 1994 — Someone in Oregon reports playing Quantum Gate on a friend's Power Mac.

24 July 1994 — "Because of financial difficulties at his distributor, Media Vision, [HyperBole's] Roach is in search of a new partner, preferably one with $10 million to invest."

27 October 1994The CD imaged at Macintosh Garden (version 1.0.2) was finalized on this date, but only a few files were modified in September and October. The rest date to 16 June or earlier.

12 November 1994 — "In October, [HyperBole] forged a joint-venture partnership with the Warner Music Group, which itself came on the heels of an earlier pact that saw the WEA family of companies take on exclusive packaging, manufacturing, and distribution duties for the firm's products."

December 1994 — Inside Mac Games lists Quantum Gate as a new release during this month. HyperBole runs an ad for it in the December issue of MacUser.

If Media Vision managed to get a handful of Mac copies out earlier in the year, but were too hampered by the scandal to promote them, it would connect several of the above dots. However, I've yet to find any hard proof that this happened. —Daxeria (talk) 23:24, 22 April 2018 (EDT)

A series category for Bucky O'Hare

Would it be neccecary to make a series category for Bucky O'Hare? There were only two games (excluding the LCD game) made for the show, so it'd probably be a bit too short for making one.

Programs you used?

Hey, I've been wanting to dig through Amiga games and try to find hidden developer logs in games. What programs have you used to gain access into this games to find the logs? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tanasinn (talk • contribs)

WinUAE can dump memory from games as they are running, saving the current session in memory. It's useful to have at least a few megs for this. There's also decompression programs out there for the more common compression methods like RNC. Of course, using hex editors and WinRAR do help me quite a bit. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:25, 14 May 2018 (EDT)

Confused about a message

I received a "this image needs to replaced" banner on this file. It reads "Reason: This seems excessive. Video upload, maybe?". I'm a bit confused by what it's telling me. 1) In what ways does it seem excessive and 2) what does it mean by "video upload, maybe?". I'll fix it as soon as it is clarified. --Nikki (talk) 16:32, 25 May 2018 (EDT)

Basically, I don't see the point of having a .gif of a distant object in the background, especially when it's barely visible in the .gif (the dithering doesn't help either). Considering the gif is 11 MB, you could probably capture a similar video of the same length and upload it on an external website.--From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 16:33, 25 May 2018 (EDT)
Sounds good, I'll work on that now. I can just upload it to YouTube and link it. Is there a way to delete the .gif file? --Nikki (talk) 16:37, 25 May 2018 (EDT)
Already deleted it. Feel free to upload the video. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 16:39, 25 May 2018 (EDT)

Images Not Generating Thumbnails

I was working on the Prerelease article for Megadimension Neptunia VII, uploaded some images for comparison between the early and final CGs found in-game, and when I uploaded those pics, the thumbnails weren't even generating properly.

The pics were: NepV2-Naked CPUs CG Final.png and NepV2-Adult Neptune CG Final.png.

Sammyrms1 (talk) 01:02, 13 June 2018 (EDT)

"Error creating thumbnail: convert: magick/splay-tree.c:880: GetValueFromSplayTree: Assertion `splay_tree != (SplayTreeInfo *) ((void *)0)' failed."
No idea what to make of this. First time I've seen this error. Best guess is that they're freaking enormous, which causes issues due the max thumbnail size being 1 MB.
Also keep in mind TCRF currently has less than 100 MB of space remaining, so don't go wasting it nilly-willy. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 01:08, 13 June 2018 (EDT)

Unused warp goals in Super Monkey Ball 2

I posted the following to the Super Monkey Ball 2 talk page, but nobody noticed it, so I'll post it here instead.

Jungle Island is the only world/backdrop in the game without a red warp goal in any of its stages. However, it does exist in the game's coding, and can be seen in this level hack of Super Monkey Ball 2.

Also, another custom level showcased warp goals in the bonus stage backdrop (which are normally unused), but I don't remember what video that was. Still, these warp goals are unused, and should be added to the Super Monkey Ball 2 page. --ShootingStar7X (talk) 23:14, 16 June 2018 (EDT)

Definitely should post about this. Would like to get model rips, but I'd also like to not show the debug HUD. However, I can't do everything under the sun either, even when it comes to hacking. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 23:22, 16 June 2018 (EDT)

Regional difference?

Hi,

I was wondering if the Ready Set Go - Traffic Lights difference in Sonic R (Windows) counts as a regional difference? Although there's no language selection in-game, you can easily switch languages with the provided batch files (at least on my Xplosiv copy of the game, I don't know about copies by other publishers. In fact, I'm not even sure every copy actually has the other language files.). Same with the crying thing in Theme Hospital: there's no language selection but you can easily change the language if you know what you're doing. Thanks. AdamP (talk) 20:36, 17 June 2018 (EDT)

Probably did that to save on localization costs. Is it a revisional difference though? --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 20:46, 17 June 2018 (EDT)
I have no idea :(. I don't know if it's something Xplosiv did or Sega or Traveller's Tales themselves did before or after the game's release. All I know is that my copy has a "localise" folder with files for English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian, and batch files for the easy switching between languages. I looked at each language's icon00.raw, and the English one has the words, and all the others have the traffic lights in their place. It probably should be noted that I think the other languages still have speech (in English) of the words: it's only the graphics that are different. AdamP (talk) 20:56, 17 June 2018 (EDT)
From what I've heard, XPLOSIV is a budget releaser, they re-release games and cut things out and sometimes they change stuff. That might be something. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 09:49, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
Could be. I saw this YouTube video with the game in Spanish and it has traffic lights. One commenter actually asked how come he (the uploader) has traffic lights rather than "Ready, Set, Go", and the uploader said he thinks it is because of Xplosiv. However, that doesn't explain why the English version still has "Ready, Set, Go". There are even comments asking how come the game is in Spanish, so maybe Xplosiv did the other languages? (then again, it could simply be that they don't know how to switch languages). If it is an Xplosiv thing, then that would be a revisional difference even if not a regional one. AdamP (talk) 14:14, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
What I'd like to know is that if the original release is like that. (Why would the language select be through batch files anyway (is there even any mentions)? That's even more obscure method than in-game options which nobody seems to check.) On the subject of Xplosiv, I once saw this Xplosiv release of Starsky & Hutch on PC on thrift store, and the manual told the cheat code to unlock everything. I kek'd. I wonder how many knows that, as no-one ever reads manuals. I didn't buy it, because it wasn't the original release. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 14:49, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
I don't have the original version, so I wouldn't know :(. However, I looked at the language files on the CD, and the other languages' files all have (roughly; there are a few minor differences) the same Last Modified dates as their English counterparts. They are all dated between late August and mid October 1998 (before the game was released). Most of the batch files are dated 28 September 1998. Also curious is that the html help is available in not just these languages, but also Japanese, which the game doesn't have (at least this version). AdamP (talk) 15:05, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
That could be the case of using generic icons instead of text for different regions (this is done with some animated features I've seen and heard). If something is changed though, there's always programs to change the dates. Or it was like that to begin with. Too bad neither of us has the 90's disc. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 15:19, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
I know it's just one file (I need to check the rest of it at some point), but I've just looked at each version of icon00.raw, and the only text-to-icon difference I can see is there being traffic lights in the other language versions where in the English version are the words "Ready", "Set", and "Go". AdamP (talk) 15:32, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
They couldn't fit them words so they made that change? That's the only thing that comes to mind if that's the case. --PSXDRIVERPLAYER OUT. (talk) 15:35, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
Or it might be because there doesn't appear to be any direct 3-word equivalent in some of those languages? https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/on_your_mark,_get_set,_go (see translations). Actually, scratch that. I wasn't reading it properly. You could be right. AdamP (talk) 15:41, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
I wonder what happens when you play the Saturn version without singing. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:44, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
You mean with the vocals turned off? AdamP (talk) 22:05, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
Yes, I'm wondering if the traffic lights are also in the Saturn version (even if unused). --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 22:14, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
I don't have the Saturn version, so I wouldn't know :(. AdamP (talk) 22:16, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
Update: I asked Jon Burton, and he said he reckons the traffic lights saved localising the text. Should I put that in the article? Also, should the article perhaps compare screenshots as well as the actual graphics? AdamP (talk) 16:57, 21 June 2018 (EDT)
May as well just rip the graphics. Still worth checking the Saturn version first. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:40, 21 June 2018 (EDT)

Is this worth mentioning?

Hi again,

I mention a bug (I assume it's a bug as it doesn't make sense for this to happen) in the debug mode of Gearheads (Windows) where the sound effects are disabled when you click OK on the App Setup dialogue box. This had been irritating for quite some time and after much trawling through the machine code in a hex editor and disassembly code, I found the code that causes this to happen (it's at address 59F9, at least on my debug-enabled executable file (I had copied the missing stuff from the normal menu. That might have changed the addresses of the functions)). I replaced the MOV instruction with 3 NOP instructions with a hex editor, and it now seems to be working okay. I tested everything on the window I know to work (there are still bits whose function I'm not sure about) and it all still does, and I don't think anything else is broken either. Is this worth mentioning on that page or a bugs page? Thanks. AdamP (talk) 22:03, 18 June 2018 (EDT)

The former, since it's not really accessible without hacking anyway. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 22:14, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
You mean mention it on the main page? AdamP (talk) 22:17, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
Yes. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 22:18, 18 June 2018 (EDT)
I've done so. Yes, I think my addition of the missing normal stuff changed the addresses of the code, therefore I hope my explanation is adequate (there are also several groups of 3 octets having those exact values, so I had to try to avoid misleading readers). Another thing: should I document the gerhead.ini parameters for the toys? Technically, you don't need to use the debug screens to modify the toys, as you can do so by editing gearhead.ini and manually doing what the debug mode does (however, I would never have found that out without using the debug screens! :) It's not documented anywhere). It's in the same vein as what's already in the article about the parameters and the App Setup window. Thanks. AdamP (talk) 20:01, 19 June 2018 (EDT)

Weather data in Pokémon Black 2/White 2

Hello, I'm a ROM researcher for most Pokémon games, I've actually been curious about how exactly did you manage to change the weather values for a map in Pokémon B2/W2? I've been doing some research on B/W map data, and I'd really like to help document some of the data. And as I've noticed, the maptable in a/0/1/2 does not contain weather values. And I've been looking very hard in the game's memory, and I've only got as close as modifying Route 4's weather in the "calender.c" location at RAM offset 0x02257CB8-02257CB9. I've managed to change its map ID in the memory to a different map, but it works only on certain maps. If I change the ID to Nuvema Town (0x185), it doesn't sandstorm, it remains sunny, while other maps such as Nimbasa City, Route 5 and many others can change to that weather effect. I really don't quite get how the weather system functions in B/W/B2/W2. I really thought I'd ask you, since you're the one who actually posted the unused thunderstorm and tornado weather effects in Black 2/White 2. I'd really like to know the locations of the weather values in RAM and in the ROM itself, and how exactly it operates. It's something I'd really like to document. Thank you so much! Platinum Lucario (talk) 12:11, 18 July 2018 (EDT)

Sorry, my mistake, wrong person. I was meaning to ask the one that uploaded the unused weather in Black 2/White 2. Platinum Lucario (talk) 12:24, 18 July 2018 (EDT)

Suitable for prerelease?

I found this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqnXJHqU0_U&feature=youtu.be It's a recording of a reupload of a video showing a version of Freedom Planet that existed before the first released demo (1.0.0), and it has differences from that demo. I want to know if this is suitable to make a prerelease article about, or if it should be another sub page of the prototype article. Also, the game was still a fan game at this point, and the help article for prerelease states not to add those. Or ask an admin if I'm not sure. --WhiteCheddaPichu (talk) 18:54, 24 July 2018 (EDT)

That goes on the prerelease page. And since Freedom Planet became something else (and the main guidelines already allow fan games, but only with admin permission), I'll let you post this on. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 21:24, 24 July 2018 (EDT)

Weird games

Hi,

I have a couple of weird games: one is called 'Escape'. I have no idea what is is or what to do (there's a grid which has icons of stuff including a smiley face and what look like PCs), but the about dialogue credits RobD of Duff Software, and the icon is a bomb. I'm wondering if this could be a prototype of an unreleased game? (I can't find anything like it on any of the Entertainment Packs) The other one is called YATC (standing for Yet Another Tetris Clone), whose help file says the game is still in development. Again, the about dialogue box credits RobD of Duff Software, but this time the icon appears to be some medicine thingy (the help file claims, perhaps jokingly, is has nothing to do with Dr Mario). The game bears an extremely close similarity to Dr Mario. Could this be a prototype of Tetris (Microsoft, Windows, 1990)? Thanks? AdamP (talk) 23:21, 16 August 2018 (EDT)

Escape could well be a mock-up akin to the McDonalds game on the Atari 2600 or a really early version of Minesweeper. As for YATC, possibly a prototype, but I'd have to see a screenshot to be sure.--From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 10:33, 30 August 2018 (EDT)
